Public Safety Telecommunicator

Public Safety Telecommunicator Full time position within the Police & Public Safety Department of Fayetteville State University. The primary purpose of the position is to perform technical communications, including receiving and prioritizing emergency and non‑emergency calls, monitoring alarms and surveillance systems, coordinating response procedures, dispatching public safety personnel, and maintaining communication logs and databases. Employees operate complex telecommunications and computer equipment such as multi‑line phone systems, multi‑channel police consoles, two‑way radios, emergency alert notification systems, video surveillance systems, scanners, and Division of Criminal Information (DCI) terminals. Candidates must apply knowledge of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and departmental policies, manage multiple tasks, remain calm under high‑stress situations, enter data accurately and efficiently, maintain DCI certification, and locate information from terminals or other sources. The position may require shift, weekend, holiday, and overtime work. Responsibilities Receive emergency and non‑emergency calls. Monitor alarms and video surveillance systems. Obtain and relay information, prioritizing calls for service and for alarm response. Coordinate response procedures and dispatch appropriate public safety personnel. Maintain public safety communications logs and databases. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency and demonstration of necessary competencies. Certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment. Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in telecommunications, radio dispatch, or related environment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to work independently and collaboratively, adapt to change, and maintain confidentiality and discretion in the course of conducting business.
