Dental Hygienist

Overview The Dental Hygienist at the VA Northern California Healthcare System (VAPAHCS) provides direct patient care under the general supervision of the dentist and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently. Basic Requirements United States citizenship is required. Non‑citizens may be appointed only if no qualified citizens are available, in accordance with VA policy. Associate degree or higher from an accredited dental hygiene program (CODA‑accredited or an internationally equivalent program that meets the requirements for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination). Licensure & Certification Current, full, and unrestricted dental hygienist license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Certification to administer radiologic procedures in accordance with 42C.F.R. Part75. Must be a recognized radiographer accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education. Physical & Language Requirements Physical requirements per VA Directive and Handbook 5019: moderate lifting (15‑44lb), light lifting ( Proficiency in spoken and written English (38U.S.C. §7403(f)). Experience & KSAs At least one year of experience at the GS‑8 or lower level demonstrating the clinical competencies described at that level. Knowledge of hygiene procedures, radiography equipment and safety, fluoride products, plaque and calculus detection, patient education, and assessment of medical and dental conditions. Skill in detecting plaque and calculus, assessing inflammation, providing safe instrumentation, and educating patients and caregivers on oral health. Ability to assess the impact of medical and dental conditions on oral health, recognize age‑related changes, and adapt care for maximum patient comfort. Preferred Experience One year of experience.
