Through partnerships among students, administration, faculty, staff, parents, board, alumni, researchers and the professional community.Position Overview:Recreation staff are support staff, they are hard-working, organized, reliable, willing to go the extra mile, ensure the safety and well being of our students. Support staff must have the ability and skills to develop a positive rapport with the students while having the ability to challenge behaviors when required. Support staff are often in the community actively participating in recreation activities with the students, therefore it is a requirement to act professionally while representing Brehm.Job Duties and Responsibilities:Creating safe environment where students can work on deficits and practice new behaviors (often times off campus in the community)Develop a rapport with each student by being an active listener, provide support and assist the student(s)' reach their goalsDevelop & maintain an empathetic relationship with studentsEmpower students to practice self-advocacy skills Assisting students with methods of building and maintaining interpersonal relationshipsEncourage students to utilize the Communication ModelHold students accountable on the Residential Tier SystemReport and document behavioral incidentsUtilize the internal Communication Log to document happenings on shift with appropriate communicationsFollow medical protocols, including supervising distribution of medications and completing medical incident reportsScreen materials brought in by students Read and respond to emails daily while workingAssist in managing conflict resolutionEnsure health and safety regulations are met during travel in school vehiclesCooperate and participate with staff and students during shiftsCommunicate effectively with students, staff and Student Life Residential StaffActively participate in assigned recreational activities Supervise students and activitiesModel communication skills, positive behavior (ie., no profanity, loud volume)and a professional manner (hygiene and dress)Participate in inservice trainingsMaintain schedule of activities and discuss proposed changes with immediate supervisorComplete required administrative tasks such as time cards, purchase orders and vehicle check logsEnsure all receipts, keys, credit cards and money are turned in at the end of each shiftEnsure company vehicles are kept neat and clean after each outing and report any vehicle issue to direct supervisorSupport, uphold and enforce all school policiesSkills Required:Leadership skillsAbility to multi-taskFlexible skill setAbility to instruct, supervise, participate and motivate studentsAbility to demonstrate sensitivity and empathy to the population and staff Strength and endurance to work occasional long weekend hoursAbility to demonstrate patience and a therapeutic approach in all situationsTime ManagementReliability and consistencyOrganizational skillsMaintain appropriate boundaries with studentsAbility to communicate effectively with students and staff both verbally and writtenAbility to pass the First Aid and CPR certification provided by BrehmAbility to provide transportation for students in school vehicles Ability to follow policies, procedures and protocolsWork Hours & ConditionsOn campus activities( indoor and outdoor), local community outings and activities in neighboring cities & states (Paducah, Ky, Cape Girardeau, Mo, St. Louis, Mo.)Scheduled for an average of 20 - 28 hours per week Weekday afternoons - M - F - 2:45PM - 4:45PMWeekends Saturday & Sunday - 12:45PM - 4:15PMSome longer shifts on Saturdays & occasional Sundays (long weekends) 1 - 2 times a month to compensate for longer travel time to activities10 month academic yearNon - benefits eligiblePhysical Demands:This position is very active and may require standing, running, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, lifting, bike riding, swimming, canoeing and fishingEducational requirements:High School diploma or equivalent requiredPreferred candidates pursuing higher educational degree in areas of, human services, outdoor education/recreation, physical education/training, social work, educational related fields, speech & language, rehab & psychologyKnowledge and Experience Preferred:Experience working with Jr High & High School age students Experience with learning differences Experience with conflict resolution, problem solving and mediation experienceResidential/boarding/camp experience/school experienceConditions of Employment:A valid Illinois driver's licenseAbility to pass a criminal background checkAbility to pass a driving background checkAbility to maintain clean driving recordValid vehicle insurancePhysical exam and TB testProvide FIrst Aid and CPR certification or willingness to participate in class at BrehmImmediate SupervisorDirector of Student LifeThe intent of this job description is to provide a representation and level of the types of duties and responsibilities that will be required of positions given this title and shall not be construed as a declaration of the total of the specific duties and responsibilities of any particular position.
