Job Category: Academic Staff Employment Type: Regular Job Profile: Chemist I Job Summary: This position will work with a team of chemists in the laboratory of the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP), as part of the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH), to provide robust precipitation and air chemistry data that supports scientists, policymakers, and environmental monitoring programs across the nation. The successful candidate will perform routine analysis on thousands of precipitation and passive air samples annually with minimal supervision. Laboratory responsibilities include the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of flow injection analyzers (FIA), segmented flow analyzers (SFA), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), ion chromatography (IC) systems, and pH and conductivity instrumentation. Additional responsibilities will include quality assurance and quality control activities, data review, and participation in laboratory process improvement initiatives. Success in this role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, initiative, independence, and that ability to work collaboratively within a team environment. An interest in emerging atmospheric pollutants continues to grow, NADP plays an important role in developing new monitoring capabilities and advancing environmental measurement science. The successful candidate may have opportunities to participate in method development, data evaluation, and research projects as the program needs and workloads allow. These efforts often involve collaboration with NADP stakeholders and may include preparation of technical reports, scientific publications, and oral presentations. Primary work hours are 7:45 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Key Job Responsibilities: Prepares technical reports, makes scientific recommendations based on findings, and presents materials to stake holder groups through various mediums - 10% Utilizes, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instrumentation and information management systems to meet unit objectives in alignment with strategic initiatives - 10% Performs high complexity analytical testing, employing quality control and quality assurance practices - 50%i> Performs non-routine instrument maintenance and repairs - 5% Engages in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methodologies including techniques for chemical research experiments - 5% Provides result interpretation and participates in educational and outreach activities - 5% Supports and/or trains new employees, students, and other professional colleagues - 10% Establishes and maintains partnerships with internal and external stakeholders and communicates research updates to appropriate entities - 5% Department: WSLH - Environmental Health Division - NADP Compensation: $50,000/year minimum (Depending on qualifications) Required Qualifications: -Chemist I: Chemistry college-level laboratory course work required. -Chemist II: Science college-level laboratory course work required. 3 years analytical laboratory experience required. Preferred Qualifications: -Chemist I: Analytical laboratory experience preferred. -Chemist II: 5+ years analytical laboratory experience preferred. Previous experience working in an environmental laboratory setting is highly desired. Experience with FIA, SFA, ICP-OES, and IC instrumentation preferred. Education: Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related science (environmental science, biology) required.
