Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for the leadership, development, implementation, and oversight of the strength and conditioning program for Columbia College Athletics. This position works collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, and athletics administration to provide comprehensive performance training designed to enhance athletic performance, reduce the risk of injury, and support the overall development and well-being of Columbia College student-athletes. The Head Strength and Conditioning Coach will oversee strength and conditioning programming for Columbia College athletic teams and provide leadership and supervision for graduate assistants and other strength and conditioning personnel.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Leading and overseeing the overall strength and conditioning program for Columbia College Athletics.
  • Designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive strength, conditioning, speed, agility, mobility, and performance programs for assigned athletic teams.
  • Coordinating strength and conditioning schedules and coverage for Columbia College athletic programs to maximize available facilities, staffing, and resources.
  • Conducting and supervising team and individual training sessions while ensuring proper exercise technique, safety, and appropriate progression.
  • Developing sport-specific and individualized training programs based on the needs of student-athletes and their respective sports.
  • Monitoring and evaluating student-athlete performance and progress and adjusting training programs as appropriate.
  • Collaborating with head coaches to establish performance goals and develop training programs that complement each program's competitive and practice schedules.
  • Working closely with athletic training staff regarding injury prevention, rehabilitation, return-to-play progression, and modifications for injured or recovering student-athletes.
  • Promoting a positive, motivating, disciplined, and inclusive training environment that supports the physical and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of research, trends, technology, and best practices in strength and conditioning, sport science, injury prevention, and athletic performance.
  • Maintaining appropriate records related to student-athlete training, testing, performance, and participation.
  • Overseeing the safe and appropriate use of strength and conditioning facilities and equipment.
  • Assisting with the maintenance, organization, inspection, and inventory of strength and conditioning equipment and making recommendations regarding equipment replacement and future needs.
  • Developing and enforcing policies and procedures related to the safe operation and use of strength and conditioning facilities.
  • Supervising, mentoring, and evaluating the Strength and Conditioning Graduate Assistant and other assigned student or part-time personnel.
  • Providing professional development and education for strength and conditioning staff and student workers as appropriate.
  • Maintaining appropriate professional certifications and continuing education requirements.
  • Attending and actively participating in Athletics Department meetings, staff development opportunities, and other college activities as assigned.
  • Participating in athletic department events, fundraising efforts, and other departmental initiatives.
  • Working effectively and professionally with student-athletes, coaches, administrators, athletic trainers, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and other members of the Columbia College community.
  • Demonstrating a working knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations and maintaining the integrity of the athletic program through the appropriate application of these rules.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by Athletics Administration.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Performance, or a related field.
  • Current nationally recognized strength and conditioning certification, such as Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain certification upon employment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strength and conditioning principles, exercise technique, program design, injury prevention, and student-athlete safety.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, administrators, and student-athletes.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Performance, or a related field.
  • Previous strength and conditioning experience in a collegiate athletics environment.
  • Experience designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs for multiple sports.
  • Experience supervising graduate assistants, interns, student workers, or other strength and conditioning personnel.
  • Knowledge of NAIA or collegiate athletics rules, policies, and best practices.

Physical requirements include:

  • Regularly required to stand for long periods of time, talk, and hear.
  • Required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Employee must be able to type on a computer keyboard and use a computer monitor on a regular basis.

Work conditions include:

  • Rarely exposed to outside weather conditions; however, possible exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety may occur while operating certain equipment.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually mild.
