Advanced Practice Provider (APRN/PA) - ECMO

Job Summary — Extracorporeal Membranous Oxygenation (ECMO) Service Tampa General Hospital seeks a skilled Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant (PA) with specialized experience in cardiac critical care to support its ECMO Service Line . This role focuses on providing comprehensive care to ECMO patients, emphasizing health promotion, disease prevention, and management of acute and chronic conditions. The APP will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care and contribute to advancing the ECMO program. The APP will have an opportunity to practice autonomously and collaboratively within their established scope. All TGH team members are responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital. Responsibilities — ECMO Service Provide comprehensive care to ECMO patients, including initial assessments, care plan development, and adjustment of ECMO settings based on clinical indicators. Monitor ECMO parameters daily, troubleshoot issues, and respond to complications such as bleeding, clotting, and infection. Perform bedside procedures (e.g., arterial lines, central lines, cannulation assistance) in line with institutional guidelines. Partner with intensivists, perfusionists, and nursing staff to optimize patient outcomes. Act as a liaison between the healthcare team and patients’ families, providing education on ECMO therapy and addressing concerns. Utilize diagnostic tools and interpret lab results to guide patient care decisions. Request, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic and laboratory tests and take appropriate actions as medically indicated in accordance with departmental protocols, identifying and reporting any specific signs and symptoms, problems or potential problems requiring further assessment, communication, and/or intervention to promote positive outcomes. Work autonomously as well as in collaboration with a variety of individuals to diagnose and manage clients' health care problems. Technical Knowledge, Skills & Abilities — ECMO Service Minimum 2 years of experience as a provider in critical care (direct ECMO experience preferred). Strong knowledge of ECMO principles, including venovenous and venoarterial ECMO. Ability to perform advanced procedures such as arterial lines, central lines, and intubations (training provided if necessary). Excellent communication and teamwork abilities. Proficiency in managing high-acuity patients and navigating high-stress environments. Demonstrates current knowledge and level of expertise utilizing evidence- and theory-based practice, infection control standards, and clinical evaluations in providing care to clients in clinic or hospital-based settings, as evidenced by following established protocols. Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and electronic medical records (EMR) systems, preferably Epic. Ability to multitask in a dynamic environment. Strong written and oral communication skills. Outstanding customer service and conflict resolution abilities. Current licensure as Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant in the State of Florida. Acute Care or Adult Gerontology Acute Care required for APRNs. National certification is required for PAs. ACLS & BLS certification (American Heart Association). ECMO Specialist certification preferred. Experience in cardiac critical care, pulmonology and/or critical care, cardiothoracic surgery, advance heart failure or a related specialty strongly preferred. Extremely motivated new graduates may be considered for a position in our APP fellowship program to support their transition to practice.
