Steam Plant Operator

Assure a healthy and comfortable hospital environment through the proper operation, control and maintenance of steam-generating equipment and other minor repairs of hospital equipment. And or any other duties as directed to maintain compliance.

Responsibilities

• Manipulates valves to control the flow of water and fuel to increase or decrease steam pressure.
• Adjusts equipment controls to correct malfunctions when indicated by observation or in response to warning lights, horns or bells.
• Inspects boiler room observing the operation of equipment meters and gauges, compares findings to defined specifications.
• Maintains operating logs which include: fuel consumption, steam produced, blow-down time and meter readings.
• Records readings from bulk tanks of medical gases; performs rounds as assigned.
• Performs minor repairs and maintenance of boilers, i.e., replacing gaskets, tightening joints, repairing valves, repacking pumps, etc.
• Performs other minor repairs on hospital campus as assigned, or in response to requests from staff on weekends or 2nd/3rd shifts.
• During snowstorms, responsible for sanding/salting of major roads on hospital grounds and shoveling and sanding/salting of major pedestrian entry points to buildings.
• Completes required paperwork properly, using computer technology enhancements, as required; fulfills annual mandatory employee testing.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Experience

• Minimum of 3-5 years boiler operation and maintenance experience preferred.

Education

• Less than high school; must read and write English

Licenses/Certifications

• Apprenticeship or related trade school training or other directly related work experience.

Other

• Valid New York State Driver's License
