Description:

The Registered Nurse implements professional nursing practice centered on the patient as a whole person. The RN creates a caring environment focused on healing and wellness. The individual honors patients' minds, bodies, and spirits by respecting human dignity and uniqueness. Nursing practices are based on evidence and current research, department policies, regulatory standards, and professional guidelines. Clinical decision-making incorporates the nursing process, critical thinking, and creativity. Nursing excellence is promoted through collaborative relationships among staff and other disciplines. The Registered Nurse spends the majority of time coordinating, ensuring, and providing direct patient care activities. This includes conducting comprehensive assessments, facilitating admission, transfer, and discharge activities. The RN provides patient and family-centered education and participates in individualized treatment planning. The individual performs and documents a comprehensive assessment in accordance with nursing scope of practice and policies. The RN considers the patient's culture, age, and developmental level. Identification of patient risk factors and presenting complaints is essential. The individual collects both objective and subjective data and verifies initial admission assessments as needed. The Registered Nurse develops a prioritized problem list based on input from the inter-professional team. Actions and interventions are designed relevant to the patient's culture and age. Desired outcomes are determined in coordination with the patient and family in accordance with the medical plan of care. The RN implements patient care therapies autonomously within the established policies and procedures. The role requires explaining procedures, treatments, and processes to patients and families. The individual initiates actions to alleviate patient stress and discomfort. Changes in patient conditions are recognized, responded to, and communicated appropriately. Ongoing comprehensive patient assessments and responses to therapies are documented. The plan of care is revised and coordinated based on patient and family responses and outcomes. The Registered Nurse mentors other staff members and nursing students. Facilitation of orientation for new staff members is part of the role. The RN acts as a role model and resource to others in a clinical setting. Participation in quality improvement activities and core measures such as patient satisfaction and safety is expected. Resource utilization and workload organization are key responsibilities. The Registered Nurse ensures continuity of care and facilitates patient discharge processes effectively. The RN provides input into patient/nurse assignments considering staffing and patient acuity.
