Pediatric Emergency Department Registered Nurse

The NCH Pediatric Emergency Department is a 14-bed emergency department located at our North Naples campus that specializes in pediatric emergency care. Our Robert, Mariann and Megan McDonald Pediatric Emergency Department is the only 24-hour pediatric emergency department in Collier County. We have received numerous awards for excellent quality of care.

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department independently plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care in patient care situations using standards of care, policy and procedure. Provides direct nursing care to patients, assumes teaching and leadership responsibilities. Participates in shared decision making, unit committee and quality improvement activities. Needs minimal supervision. Primary role of Pediatric Emergency Department RN is the care for all types and age groups of emergency and minor care patients. Despite having a specialized consideration for patients aged 0-18 years of age.

• Collaborate with patient, family, the inter-professional team, and others in the conduct of nursing practice.
• Utilizes appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective, and financially responsible.

• Accountable to foster, participate, and be knowledgeable with the shared decision-making model of the NCH Healthcare System.
• Uses the appropriate aged Adult or Pediatric Triage Assessment sheet which utilizes the five-tiered system.
• Monitoring Skills: cardiac rhythm interpretation, pulse oximetry, hemodynamic measurements and interpretation.
• Maintenance of Emergency Department specific certifications, BLS, ACLS, and PALS. (PALS certification-of Emergency Department assignment).
• Obtains and maintains Board Certification of Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) by 5 years department tenure.
• Safe use, knowledge and troubleshooting of equipment specific to the Emergency Department.
• Participates in the orientation of new nursing personnel and is welcoming to all employees' serves as preceptor.
• Cross-train to all areas of the Emergency Department including EDX and MIN ADULT ED.
• Accountable and responsible for the care of admitted patients and for completion of inpatient orders of patients waiting for admission.
• Maintains continuum of care by referral of patients to the Follow Up Nurse, Case Manager or appropriate community agencies.
• Knowledgeable of patient tracking system and consistently keeps the system updated in a timely manner.
• Able to function in a fast paced, high volume environment making rapid critical decisions.
• Assists peers with assignments by being aware of activities within the department, assists peers without prompting and responds to needs in other areas.
• Flexible in rotation of schedules to meet the needs of the department and cooperate with whatever decision is most likely to benefit the team, receptive to new ideas.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

Candidates with Emergency Department Experience that will not be entering fellowship program

• Minimum of 1 year of experience as RN in acute care required. At least one year of Emergency or one year of pediatric ICU acute experience required.
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• ENPC desirable.
• TNCC desirable.
• CPEN desirable, Obtains and maintains (CPEN) by 5 years department tenure.

Candidates WITHOUT Emergency Department experience and New Graduates RN will complete Emergency Department fellowship program

• New graduate nurses will be considered for program.
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the State of Florida.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
• Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification will be obtained during program.
• BSN preferred.
• Required to sign a Fellowship agreement which includes a 2-year employment commitment to remain in Emergency Department in a full-time position after completion of training.
