Commonwealth Attorney's Office - Assistant Commonwealth Attorney The Carroll County Commonwealth Attorney's Office includes the elected Commonwealth Attorney, his Chief Deputy, 2 Assistant Commonwealth Attorneys, and 2 Administrative Assistants. Recent state funding has allowed the hiring of up to 2 additional Assistant Commonwealth Attorneys and a Secretary. While each person has their respective primary responsibilities, the office is highly interactive, with the entire staff working together to address major cases. The Victim‑Witness Coordinator's Office is located within the same suite to integrate all aspects of the prosecution team. General Definition of Work: Prosecutes cases for the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office under policies established by the elected Commonwealth Attorney, managing resources to fulfill goals and directives. Handles cases primarily at the General District Court, and also at the Circuit Court and Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court levels. Performs any other duties or assignments as assigned by the Commonwealth Attorney. Engages in the overall practice of prosecuting cases at all court levels in Virginia. Essential Functions: Provides professional direction, evaluation, and advice to police agencies regarding their administration. Attends meetings and provides staff advice to the Commonwealth Attorney, including meetings outside normal work hours. Delivers public addresses to professional and community groups. Exercises independent decision‑making on prosecution matters within the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. Must be able to try cases at all court levels, with a case load predominantly in General District Court, and also in Circuit and Juvenile & Domestic Relations Courts. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the organization, functions, and operations of the Carroll County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. Comprehensive understanding of the Code of Virginia, general statutes, ordinances, and other legislation affecting prosecution. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree and Law Degree. Current Virginia Bar License with no disciplinary actions within the past three years. Preferred: 3+ years experience as a prosecutor or equivalent practice of law. Physical Requirements: Requires frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force (occasionally up to 50 pounds), standing, walking, sitting, speaking, hearing, and repetitive hand motions. Standard vision and hearing requirements. No exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Special Requirements: Valid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
