JOB DESCRIPTION

School Counselor

REPORTS TO: Director of School Counseling

SCHEDULE:  Ten-Month Staff

POSITION SUMMARY:      A graduate of an approved counselor education program, the School Counselor guides students through a comprehensive counseling program addressing each student’s academic, career, and personal/social development.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:  

• 
  Collaborate with fellow counselors to plan, deliver, and evaluate counseling services and the school’s overall counseling program.
• 
  Coordinate the two-day freshman orientation program.

• Schedule and lead individual meetings with caseload students.
• Support the Big Sister Program, a peer-mentoring club with monthly meetings and events throughout the year.
• Guide students through problem-solving and conflict resolution.
• 
  Administer career-planning assessments to students in grades 9–12.
• Meet individually with students to plan course selection.
• Partner with school administration to plan mental health and wellness events for students and parents.
• Support students facing academic or mental health challenges.
• 
  Refer students to outside practitioners and serve as liaison with therapists, psychiatrists, and agencies to coordinate care.
• 
  Partner with advisors and teachers to address students’ academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs.
• Develop support plans that help students with learning differences achieve academic success.

• Proficiency with SCOIR and Microsoft Office platforms.
• Demonstrated multicultural competence and strong ethical and professional judgment.
• Self-motivated, with the ability to turn ideas into action.

SPECIFICATIONS : Master’s degree from an accredited program in school counseling or a closely related field required. State licensure or certification preferred; two years of relevant experience preferred.
