Maintenance Specialist I - Water/Wastewater

Hiring Range: $39,256.21 minimum – $44,163.57 first quartile (depending on qualifications) Description Under direct supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, operating equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water, wastewater, and drainage systems. Performs related duties as required. Essential Job Functions Repair leaks in the wastewater collection system or water distribution system, including pipes up to 6 feet deep, and ensure trench safety. Replace service tubing and repair or replace sewer lines, lateral lines, cleanouts, main lines, and tapping saddles. Check water and wastewater stations, keep grounds neat and clean, and assist with pumps, motors, controls, wiring, SCADA system, wet wells, dry wells, elevated towers, and ground storage tanks. Perform preventative maintenance on all station equipment and elevated towers, ground storage tanks. Remove debris, open and close valves, flush lines, and replace damaged parts using chemicals such as floating degreaser, chlorine, caustic soda, and all‑purpose cleaners. Repair manholes, clean-outs, and valves using pick, shovel, or jackhammer; perform water and sewer taps, dig trenches or holes, and assist heavy‑equipment operators. Assist other departments during emergencies and perform related duties and special projects as assigned. Maintain regular, reliable, non‑disruptive attendance and foster professional, harmonious working relationships. Minimum Requirements High School diploma or GED. No prior experience required, but construction, maintenance, and water or wastewater repair experience is preferred. Ability to follow written and oral instructions, complete work orders, fill out daily reports, and use math to calculate water usage. Ability to read and understand equipment labels, chemical instructions, reports, and memos. Ability to work safely, follow safety procedures, and operate equipment while underground or in wet conditions. Other Requirements Valid driver’s license with good driving record; must report traffic citations within two working days. Must obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License within six months of hire. Must reside within a one‑hour response time from the Public Works Building; must relocate if necessary within six months. Must possess a Class D Water License and Wastewater Collection System Class I License (or obtain within 24 months); Class C Water Distribution License and Wastewater Collection System Class II License is preferred. Ability to stand, walk on uneven terrain, lift up to 150 lbs., reach, bend, twist, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in mud, confined spaces, or extreme outdoor temperatures. Benefits The City of Rowlett offers a 4‑day work week, with standard business hours of 7:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. (dependent on departmental schedules).
