Job Description Department: Administration Reports to: Principal General Summary Assists the Principal in planning, directing, and implementing the curriculum for an individual school to ensure the educational development of each school through demonstrated planning, leadership, supervision, and administrative skills. Essential Functions Informs the principal of the conditions and needs of the school. Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the educational program of the individual school on a continuous basis and in accordance with pupils' needs within the framework of an established policy for the total school's system. Is effective in assisting the principal in the administration and coordination of the school's instructional programs to provide appropriate instructional experiences. Effectively directs the administration and coordination of the transportation, custodial, food and nutrition, and other support services of the school. Assists all personnel in the improvement of the school program and in fulfilling assigned duties, demonstrating capable staff leadership and supervision of school-level instructional personnel. Administers high standards of student conduct, enforces discipline as necessary according to due process, and actively manages attendance, conduct, and health of all students. Prepares the schedule of classes, student assignments, and extracurricular activities, and evaluates the school's extra-curricular programs. Assists in the selection, training/orienting, and supervision of school staff and evaluates staff performance. Provides placement of students and arranges services for students identified as having special needs. Inspects the school facility as requested, recommends improvements, and corrects identified deficiencies to ensure a safe environment. Assists in the safety and administration of the school plan, helping to plan and supervise fire drills, bus evacuation drills, and an emergency preparedness program. Manages the business functions of the school related to purchasing procedures and monitoring of expenditures. Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups to foster understanding and solicit support for all students’ objectives and programs. Presents a positive image of Laurens School District No. 55 at all times. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. Job Specifications Education and Experience: Master’s degree or higher in Education Administration with at least three years of experience as a teacher; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid school principal certificate and other certifications as designated. Knowledge: Knowledge in the development, planning, organization, implementation, and management of instructional programs designed to meet educational objectives and requirements; knowledge of the standards, regulations, and laws relating to educational activities; and knowledge of changes in policy, standards, procedures, and regulations relevant to the school. Skills and Effort: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with school and district staff; ability to instruct others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice; ability to complete, process, and maintain required records and reports; ability to communicate effectively with school personnel and the public; and ability to operate general office equipment such as a computer, calculator, and copier. Working Conditions School environment with minimal exposure to environmental conditions; requires ability to work under stress related to duties involving significant attention and interaction with students. Physical demands involve moving/lifting items up to 25 pounds. Occasional local travel and occasional overnight travel are required. Responsibilities Assists in the supervision of school staff and students. Terms of Employment Two hundred twenty (220) days per year for a high school assistant principal. Two hundred ten (210) days per year for elementary and middle school assistant principals. Evaluation Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on Evaluation of Administrators.
