Job Overview Water Treatment Plant Operator I – Dept. of Environmental Protection – Full Time – Location: NYC-ALL BOROS. Salary range: $49,936.00 – $69,909.00. Exam may be required. Department: Croton Filtration Plant. The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. Responsibilities Receive training in and assist in operating the facility Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Human Machine Interface (HMI) systems including the Process Monitoring Control System (PMCS), Building Monitoring System (BMS), and Electrical Control and Monitoring System (ECMS) as well as other SCADA based control systems. Receive process control laboratory training and assist in collecting water samples, perform water quality tests (chlorine residual, color, pH, turbidity, alkalinity, jar testing, phosphate, and fluoride) and in water quality data reporting. Receive training in and assist in using the facility work management system to receive and execute work orders, perform facility housekeeping, make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment as needed, use hand and/or power tools and equipment, perform confined space entries, control of hazardous energy, and other environmental health and safety procedures as required by DEP policy. Receive training in and assist in the delivery of water treatment chemicals (Sodium Hypochlorite, Aluminum Sulfate, Sodium Hydroxide, Sulfuric Acid, Phosphoric Acid, Hydrofluosilic Acid and others), offload bulk storage trucks, move and tote drums into the plant. Receive training in and assist in the calibration of chemical feed systems. Receive training in and assist in conducting regular inspections of ancillary facilities and report any abnormal operating conditions, operate gates, and take readings. Receive training in and assist in the preparation of daily plant operations and activity reports, record readings of equipment such as meters and gauges, and keep paper and electronic records. Licensing Requirements Driver License: Coincident with your appointment you must have a valid motor vehicle driver license in New York State and maintain it for the duration of employment. A valid Grade 2A Operator’s certification issued by the New York State Department of Health must be obtained within two years of appointment and maintained thereafter for the duration of assignment to Level I. Special Working Conditions Physical activities include lifting objects up to waist height, coordinating movements of hands and feet, operating with hands overhead, and working on ladders from 3 to 30 feet in height. Employees may be required to wear protective equipment (gloves, boots, goggles, earplugs, noise attenuators, face shields, respirators) and to work in temperatures ranging from 0 °F to 105 °F. Work may involve toxic or corrosive chemicals, moving parts of machinery, confined spaces up to 1 hour at a time, and surfaces such as metal gratings, macadam or cement. Minimum Qualifications A four‑year high school diploma or equivalent plus one year of experience with water or wastewater treatment equipment or mechanical equipment. An associate degree in science or applied science from an accredited college or university, majoring in Environmental Health, Environmental Technology, Electrical Technology, Mechanical Technology, Chemical Technology, Engineering Technology or a related field. Preferred Skills New York State Grade 2 Operator Certificate. Ability to follow directions. Ability to record data using electronic logs on a computer or tablet related to operations, equipment performance, maintenance activities and water quality. Ability to utilize Microsoft Office products to perform routine functions such as email, web browsing, electronic record keeping and related computer tasks. Ability to utilize hand or power tools or other instrumentation in the performance of duties such as mechanical repairs, taking water samples, or operating machinery. Residency Requirement New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. City employees who have worked for the City for two continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County.
