Corrections Recovery Coach
The Corrections Recovery Coach plays a crucial role in providing peer recovery support services to individuals with opioid use disorder and other substance use disorders in a jail setting. Drawing from lived experience, the Corrections Recovery Coach provides encouragement, support, and guidance to help individuals identify goals, navigate barriers, develop recovery and reentry plans, and connect with resources that promote successful recovery and reintegration. In accordance with program priorities and funding requirements, individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services will be prioritized for engagement and support.
This is a non-exempt position and is based on a 40-hour work week.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Peer Support and Recovery Coaching
- Provide one-on-one peer recovery coaching and support to incarcerated individuals within the Polk County Jail.
- Build trust-based and recovery-focused relationships with participants through empathy, encouragement, accountability, and strengths-based interactions.
- Engage in recovery coaching focused on recovery goals, coping strategies, life skills, reducing barriers to successful reintegration, and re-entry planning.
- Practice appropriate self-disclosure of personal recovery experiences to motivate and inspire hope.
- Support participants in identifying strengths, goals, and barriers related to recovery, housing, employment, transportation, education, and family reunification.
- Support multiple pathways of recovery, including harm reduction strategies.
- Encourage accountability, motivation, and healthy coping strategies.
- Prioritize engagement with individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT) services in accordance with program priorities and funding requirements.
- Support individuals receiving MAT services in identifying and addressing barriers to treatment engagement and continuity of care.
Re-entry and Community Connection
- Assist recoverees in developing individualized re-entry plans focused on housing, employment, treatment engagement, transportation, identification documents, recovery support, and community stability.
- Connect recoverees with community resources and peer support services before and after release.
- Support continuity of care and communication with recoverees following release from jail.
- Assist recoverees in identifying barriers to recovery and creating realistic strategies to address those barriers.
Collaboration and Advocacy
- Maintain collaborative relationships with correctional staff, treatment providers, healthcare professionals, case managers, and community partners to promote long-term recovery, stability, and reduced recidivism.
- Advocate for the dignity, rights, and well-being of individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
- Participate in team meetings, case consultations, trainings, and collaborative planning efforts.
- Educate recoverees on available treatment options, recovery resources, and support services.
- Collaborate with correctional healthcare providers, treatment providers, and community partners to support continuity of care for individuals receiving MAT services.
Documentation and Data Collection
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation of services provided.
- Enter required information into the organization's data management systems.
- Assist with data collection, reporting requirements, and continuous quality improvement efforts.
- Track engagement, referrals, and recovery support outcomes as required by grant expectations.
Professional Development and Self-Care
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development related to recovery coaching, ethics, boundaries, communication skills, recovery principles, criminal justice settings, and multiple pathways of recovery.
- Practice self-care and maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
- Consistently demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, accountability, and strong teamwork.
Other
- Assures all work performed is done in accordance with OSHA safety standards and those established by Full Circle Recovery.

Minimum Qualifications:
Personal experience with substance use disorder, recovery, and/or justice system involvement preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates with lived experience utilizing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as part of their recovery journey. Knowledge of harm reduction, criminal justice systems, recovery support services, and person-centered approaches is also preferred.
Relevant education or experience working with individuals in recovery from substance misuse preferred.
Familiarity with challenges experienced by individuals involved in correctional systems preferred.
Ability to build collaborative relationships with providers and community partners.
Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage responsibilities independently, and maintain accountability while contributing positively to a team environment.
Must agree to complete the CCAR Recovery Coach Academy, Ethical Considerations for Recovery Coaches, and Recovery Coaching in Justice Settings within six months of hire.
Skills in conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies to assist with challenging situations that may arise in a jail setting.
Effective communication and interpersonal skills; capable of interacting with a wide range of community partners and the recovery community.
Must be a self-starter with strong initiative, an independent thinker, and a collaborative team member.
Ability to listen empathetically and provide support without judgment.
Demonstrated cultural competency and ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to think critically and adapt to changing circumstances.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and adapt to changing program needs.
Knowledge of and commitment to ethical standards and confidentiality.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom), and data management.
Valid driver's license, good driving record, car insurance, and reliable transportation.
Environmental Conditions:
The work is performed within the Polk County Jail, correctional facilities, office settings, and community-based environments. Occasional local travel may be required.
Physical Requirements:
Driving, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, walking, lifting, reaching, talking, hearing, grasping and finger dexterity, repetitive motions.
Sitting approximately 50 percent of the time.
Standing approximately 20 percent of the time.
Walking approximately 20 percent of the time.
Driving approximately 10 percent of the time.
Requires the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force continuously.
Up to 50 pounds of force infrequently to lift or otherwise move objects.
Vision Requirements:
The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, and extensive reading.
