TRANSPORTATION SHOP ASSISTANT

Transportation Department Assistant

To assist in maintaining the operations of the transportation department.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities Include The Following:

  • Must work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded, dusty environments, in various temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Must work after hours (if necessary), be punctual and regular in attendance.
  • Make project estimates of time and materials needed for efficient project completion.
  • Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities.
  • Assists in performing monthly safety inspections on buses as required by the State of Alabama.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all vehicles and equipment owned by the District (including, but not limited to, suspension systems, steering systems, differentials, engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, electrical wiring systems, ignition systems, brakes).
  • Completes and maintains written maintenance records for all vehicles owned by the school system.
  • Assist mechanics in organizing and maintaining the bay and spare parts areas of the bus shop.
  • Maintains shop/service area and equipment; promotes high standards of safety.
  • Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the District.
  • Assists with road call duty as needed.
  • Performs the essential functions of a bus driver/athletic trip driver/extracurricular and field trip driver as needed, including but not limited to transporting students.
  • Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations.
  • Assists with all mechanical maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety
  • Able to check and verify school bus camera systems/video are functioning correctly.
  • Engage in work-related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement - including training to become a certified mechanic.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
  • Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems and/or opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  • Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Properly uses and cares for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system.
  • Reports absences and take leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal and local laws.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

License/Certification/Other Requirements:

Valid Alabama Driver's License. Must maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (ABL) and commercial driver's license (CDL) with P/S endorsement (or obtain within 6 weeks of hire).

Must meet Butler County Schools insurable driver requirements.

Must pass drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing.

Submit to a FMSCA-Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Full Query upon application and limited queries yearly for the term of employment with Butler County School System.

Language Skills: Ability to read at a minimum of a fifth grade level and to recognize similarities and differences between a series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills And Abilities: Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is continuously required to sit and occasionally required to walk or stand. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk while performing the duties of this job. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and peripheral vision.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of that an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 degrees and below 32 degrees and occasionally will walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud, and the employee must raise his/her voice to be heard.

Terms Of Employment

Twelve-month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
