Seasonal Engineering Assistant- Intern

Hiring range: $22.00 to $24.00 per hour. The starting rate will depend on experience, education, and qualifications. Position Description At the Anoka County Highway Department, it is our vision to enhance and protect life by providing safe roads and eliminating traffic congestion. The department has an immediate opening for Seasonal Engineering Assistant who will perform various duties. Some of the critical responsibilities of this position include assisting Project Inspector and Construction Surveyor on construction projects and preliminary surveys. This is a seasonal, non-exempt, on-site position. Interviews will take place as applications are received for those selected to move forward in the hiring process. Work Location This position will work at the Anoka County Highway building located at 1440 Bunker Lake Blvd NW, Andover MN 55304. Expected work hours are Monday – Friday work hours will vary. Job Duties and Responsibilities Assist Project Inspector and Construction Surveyor on construction projects and preliminary surveys. Collect and record documentation for materials supplied for construction projects. Assist Design Engineering with AutoCAD and spreadsheet design tasks. Measure removal items and items installed per construction plans. Complete preliminary topography for future road construction projects. Perform various other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed High school diploma or equivalent education. Must be at least 17 years of age at time of hire. Currently enrolled in a civil technology, construction management, or civil engineering degree program or related field. Must have a valid driver’s license. Successfully pass criminal history and driver’s license background check Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed Read and interpret construction plans. Physical Demands and Work Conditions Standard office environment, various county work sites both indoor and outdoor, including unfinished structures, construction sites, rough terrain, and changing weather conditions depending on assignment. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness. Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds. Ability to detect, discern, and tolerate a wide range of scents required for safety and performance of essential duties. Cognitive abilities required include problem solving, prioritization of tasks, short- and long-term memory, interpreting and understanding written documents, and general mathematical skills. Assignments require several hours of varied physical activity in addition to viewing a computer screen, sitting at a desk, or walking/standing. Physical activity may include repeated bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, walking on sloped or uneven terrain, and handling/carrying equipment. Regular lifting of 0-25 lbs., occasional lifting of up to 75 lbs. Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment in addition to various inspection and surveying equipment depending on assignment. Inspection and surveying equipment may include but is not limited to digital camera, tape measure, hammer, chisels, boom truck and other machinery, electronic drafting equipment, material testing equipment, power and hand tools, and personal protective equipment. Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle. Exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, prolonged vibration from machinery, and other hazards is possible while performing essential duties.
