Switchman

RC/Department: 6627 – Midatl Fairless Hills Terminal – Sector NOV Position Description The Switchman job involves assisting in the movement of locomotives and rail cars by throwing switches, setting brakes, coupling and uncoupling cars, observing for hazards, flagging and signaling, while maintaining proper communication and safety procedures. Responsibilities Perform individual switching, flagging, coupling, uncoupling, and brake setting. Maintain a constant watch over assigned area and equipment, continually checking for operating hazards, malfunctioning or defective equipment, track, and track obstructions. Plan the movement of rail cars, giving directions to the locomotive operator. Set track switches, set out railcars and pick up rail cars accordingly. Judge braking and stopping distances to give proper radio signals for adequate stopping. Remain continually aware of motorists, pedestrians, mobile equipment, and crane operations in the work area and provide point protection in the direction of the train movement. Identify various types of rail cars and consider whether they are loaded or empty to estimate stopping distance. Perform other duties on the terminal as required by management. Requirements Secure and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC). Read and understand all Standard Operating Procedures. Complete all required checklists. Communicate effectively with co-workers and locomotive operator. Maintain focus and constant awareness of surroundings. Work outside in extreme cold and hot conditions. Occasional pushing, reaching and overhead work as needed. Occasional lifting of up to 50–100 lbs.
