Summary This position is at the San Diego VA Healthcare System VA in San Diego CA within the Environmental Management Service in San Diego - CA. The Housekeeping Aid reports to the Housekeeping Supervisor or designee. Duties Maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families to support patient care. Execute a full range of housekeeping activities in patient and non‑patient care areas. Perform light and heavy cleaning duties, including spills, trash disposal, installing light bulbs, vacuuming, and polishing floors. Use proper cleaning solutions and chemicals to remove stains and sanitize surfaces on floors, carpets, tiles, walls, and ceilings. Clean and sanitize restrooms, patient rooms, and other areas using sanitizing chemicals that do not compromise patient health. Handle soiled linen and other contaminated items with proper collection methods. Provide bed‑making services in patient care areas, including cleaning mattresses, springs, and bed frames. Check and replenish consumable supplies such as soap, hand towels, toilet tissue, bottled water, and latex gloves. Operate powered equipment such as scrubbing machines, buffers, carpet cleaning machines, and industrial vacuums. Maintain and store equipment, cords, and hoses properly when not in use. Use ladders or scaffolds to wash ceiling fixtures and replace venetian blinds or room partitions. Perform routine maintenance on cleaning equipment, such as changing filters, brushes, tightening nuts and bolts, and greasing fittings and wheels. Defrost and clean patient‑care refrigerators and ice machines in the nourishment kitchen areas. Sweep and mop floors repeatedly in high‑traffic areas including corridors, restrooms, stairways, entryways, cafeterias, and other areas. Transport, repackage, dispose, and store sharps, and replace full sharps containers with empty ones as needed. Read and follow posted instructions through signs and pictures. Work Schedule: various hours with rotating days off. Other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements Continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Occasional use of heavy‑powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial buffers) weighing over 50 pounds.
