School Counselor

Following the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs, YISD counselors provide for the academic, career, and social/emotional development of each student through direct and indirect services. Additionally, school counselors serve as part of the leadership team at the campus and collaborate with all campus stakeholders. Adhere to federal, state laws and regulations, as well as, district policies, regulations, and procedures.

Essential Functions:

• Assist and collaborate with the School Counseling department in the implementation of the district guidance and counseling plan, including the establishment of short- and long-term counseling goals.
• Collect and submit counselor data at both the campus and Central Office.
• Address the four components of a balanced comprehensive school counseling program, define, manage, deliver, and assess, following the ASCA National Model and Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs at the assigned campus to serve and address the needs of all students.
• Contribute eighty percent (80%) of work time on duties that are components of a comprehensive school counseling program which include direct (instruction/guidance curriculum, appraisal and advising/individual planning, counseling/responsive services) and indirect (referrals, consultation, collaboration) services.
• Document and report school counseling program services using the district's Use of Time Analysis tool.
• Collect and analyze campus and student data to assess the effectiveness of the comprehensive school counseling program.
• Advise students and parents regarding the importance of post-secondary education, coursework designed to prepare students for post-secondary education, and financial aid availability and requirements.
• Contribute to students' College and Career Readiness (CCR) attainment through the implementation of school-wide CCR activities.
• Assist students and parents with the following: college admission process, financial aide and scholarship application process, dual credit enrollment, and military enlistment (high school only).
• Interpret data from assessment instruments to assist students and parents with making educational and career plans (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)/End of Course (EOC), Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), Credit-By-Examination (CBE), PSAT, SAT, ACT, Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSIA), Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), etc.).
• Assist students in making the transition successfully from one level to another.
• Deliver all state-mandated and district-mandated lessons and support classroom counseling lessons for all students.
• Support and contribute to the integration of the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) component at assigned campus.
• Review student records/transcripts and maintain audits in a consistent, timely, and effective manner to ensure all students are on track to meet graduation requirements (high school only).
• Collaborate with all campus stakeholders and mental health agencies as a means to advocate for all students and their needs.
• Seek personal improvement and professional growth to further enhance skills in order to provide effective academic, social/emotional, and college/career supports to all students.
• Provide faculty and staff trainings on topics that include, but not limited to, suicide prevention/intervention, Child Protective Services (CPS) reporting procedures, bullying/cyberbullying, substance abuse, and mental health.
• Provide parent meetings on topics that support the school counseling program and impact student success.
• Serve as part of the Campus Crisis Management Team/Emergency Operations Plan (EOP).
• Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.
• Other Responsibilities:
• Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
• Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Master's degree; Texas School Counselor certification (Pre-K through 12); two (2) years of full-time creditable teaching experience (Pre-K through 12).
• Knowledge of educational programs, demonstrated ability to work with students, parents and school personnel.
• Texas/New Mexico driver's license, insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier.
• Subject to district drug and alcohol testing policy and regulation.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

• Maintain emotional control under stress; ability to work with frequent interruptions; prolonged use of computers and occasional prolonged and irregular hours; occasional district-wide travel.
