Dental Assistant (Per Diem)

Dental Assistant (Per Diem) Location: York Correctional Institution, East Lyme, CT. This per diem position may require travel to other DOC facilities as needed. Responsibilities Assist with restorative, prosthodontic, periodontic, endodontic and oral surgery procedures. Prepare dental restorative and prosthetic materials. Ensure compliance with OSHA infection control regulations. Record medical histories. Perform instrument exchange procedures for operative dentistry, including general dentistry, pedodontics, prosthetics, orthodontics, periodontics and oral surgery. Prepare, develop and mount radiographs. Maintain equipment and supply inventories, and perform daily maintenance of major equipment. Schedule appointments and process billing/insurance information. Illustrate proper preventive dental hygiene to individuals. Assure completeness and accuracy of dental medical records. Prepare reports and correspondence; send reminder cards as needed. Assist in taking radiographs, pouring molds, and performing related duties. Act as triage and/or receptionist for incoming telephone calls. Perform related duties as required. Qualifications One (1) year of experience as a dental assistant. OR completion of a dental assisting program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Knowledge of dental assisting operative procedures. Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Special Requirements: Successfully completed the Infection Control Examination (ICE) administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Successfully completed the Dental Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) examination administered by DANB. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a correctional, forensic, or other secure/locked institutional environment. Demonstrated ability to accurately track and manage dental instruments, including sharps counts, in compliance with facility procedures. Experience providing dental support across multiple clinic sites or departments. Willingness and flexibility to travel between facilities and float as assigned. Familiarity with inventory control and chain of custody procedures within secure healthcare settings. Working Conditions Incumbents may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions, communicable and/or infectious diseases, and some risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive individuals.
