Internal Medicine Physician

The Internal Medicine Physician provides high quality clinical services to adult patients within a community-based setting that promotes healthy lifestyles, prevention of illness and injury and management of acute and chronic conditions. Activities involve direct patient care for Neighborhood Health's diverse patient population, physical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and referral for specialty services as needed, and follow-up.

The Internal Medicine Physician provides care in collaboration with the center's team of physicians, nurse practitioners, behavioral health and dental providers, pharmacists, nurses and medical assistants.

Demonstrates commitment to Neighborhood Health's mission of improving health and advancing health equity in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax by providing access to high quality primary care regardless of ability to pay.

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Provides complete, comprehensive, patient centered outpatient primary care to adult patients, including health examination and treatment of medical conditions, to include follow up of any problems detected.
• Performs patient history and physical assessment; orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests for differential diagnoses; performs minor surgical procedures, as appropriate, with follow up treatment as medically indicated.
• Manages acute and chronic conditions, develops a plan of care and coordinates care within an integrated primary care team.
• Provides timely and accurate documentation in patient medical record.
• Refers for specialty care and follows up with patient as indicated.
• Collaborates with nursing, health education, behavioral health, dental, pharmacy and other support staff to assure maximum patient access to support services.
• Works closely with clinical staff to ensure a team approach to the delivery of services and a holistic approach to patient care.
• Participates in an on-call system to back up nurse triage service as needed.
• Participates in Neighborhood Health peer review program.
• Participates on Health Center committees as appointed by Chief Medical Officer.
• Attends regular staff meetings and trainings as required by Neighborhood Health.

Other Duties:

• Able to work under minimal supervision.
• Assists with developing, coordinating, and/or recommending improvements in program area.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Qualification/Education and/or Experience Requirements:

• Successful completion of four years of medical school and residency in a certified program.
• Must be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine. If not board certified, must obtain certification within one year of hire.
• Dedication to the mission of Neighborhood Health and to working with an underserved population.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse work force and client base.
• Prior outpatient clinical experience preferred.
• Bilingual Spanish/English Preferred.
