Job DescriptionThe Team:The Programming, EIO/HWIO (Ethernet Input/Output Hardware Input/Output) Systems Engineering Team represents two of the eight Mech Infra Systems teams: the Mech Infra Programming System and the Controller Hardware System (EIO/HWIO); the other six are Diagnostics, Ethernet Communications, Non-Ethernet Communications, Power Management, Safety, and Cybersecurity. The Programming System owns the end-to-end strategy, requirements, flows, test automation, and recovery behavior that enable SDV ECUs to be safely, securely, and repeatably programmed and updated across development, manufacturing, service, and field environments. The EIO/HWIO System defines and validates controller input/output capabilities—including sensing, actuation, diagnostics, I/O mapping, performance, and voltage-reference monitoring—to ensure controllers and Ethernet I/O devices operate reliably and are diagnosable. Together, these two systems represent complementary areas of Mech Infra SW: Programming manages how software is delivered and updated, while EIO/HWIO enables the controller-level interfaces through which the system interacts with physical devices. Programming also supports any previous electrical architectures such as VIP.The Role:General Motors is currently seeking a Staff System Engineer specializing in Mechatronic Flash Programming. This role will define, implement, and continuously improve flash-programming requirements, architectures, tools, and validation strategies for advanced mechatronic systems across GM vehicle programs.The engineer will serve as a technical lead across development, manufacturing, over-the-air (OTA), and service programming environments. The role connects system requirements, embedded software, diagnostics, vehicle networks, programming tools, test automation, cybersecurity, and manufacturing execution to deliver reliable and efficient vehicle software updates.What You'll Do (Responsibilities):Define and deliver flash-programming requirements and solutions for advanced mechatronic systems across GM vehicle programs.Lead programming strategies for development, manufacturing, OTA, and service environments.Partner with software, hardware, diagnostics, cybersecurity, manufacturing, and vehicle-integration teams to deliver reliable solutions.Develop and improve programming tools, diagnostics, scripts, and automated tests.Analyze programming issues, identify root causes, and drive effective corrective actions.Maintain requirements, test coverage, traceability, and technical documentation.Establish reusable standards and practices that improve programming quality, efficiency, and scalability.Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and roadmap direction for programming capabilities in future architecturesMentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on complex programming tasks.Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for flash programming quality and efficiency.Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.10+ years of experience in Software Development, with a strong focus on embedded systems or automotive applications.Strong experience with automotive flash programming, embedded systems, vehicle diagnostics, and software requirements.Experience developing or reviewing software, scripts, engineering tools, or test automation.Experience across the software or systems development lifecycle and with agile methods.Experience using Wireshark or similar tools to analyze PCAP and diagnostic traffic.People Skills:Exceptional Cross-Functional Leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.A strong commitment to Continuous Learning and staying abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies.Demonstrated ability in Group Problem Solving and analytical thinking to resolve complex technical issues.Proven Strategic Leadership capabilities in defining and executing technical roadmaps.What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.Experience with automotive diagnostic protocols (e.g., UDS) and vehicle communication networks (e.g., CAN, Ethernet) is highly desirable.Experience programming clients and interfaces.Experience with programming archives, binary and calibration content, utility files, interpreter specifications, archive parsers, or content-selection tools.Experience with manufacturing end-of-line programming, OTA programming, or dealership programming.Experience with C++, Python, C#, or other languages used for tool development and automation.Demonstrated ability to use AI tools to enhance productivity, solve complex problems, and validate outputs.Experience with Software defined vehicle architectures, centralized computing, vehicle gateways, aggregators, system managers, or virtual ECUs.Company Vehicle: Upon successful completion of a motor vehicle report review, you will be eligible to participate in a company vehicle evaluation program, through which you will be assigned a General Motors vehicle to drive and evaluate.Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.#LI-DH2 GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
