Director of Local News and Sports

Camden News is seeking a Director of Local News and Sports to lead and manage the newsroom’s local news and high school sports coverage. The Director will oversee news and sports assignments, supervise staff, maintain high editorial standards, and foster strong community relationships. This role provides strategic direction to ensure content is accurate, relevant, and engaging. Responsibilities include setting editorial priorities, upholding journalistic standards, assigning, editing, and approving news and sports stories, as well as supervising, mentoring, and evaluating reporters and editors. The Director will oversee content accuracy, fairness, and completeness; direct the layout and production of sports and news sections; build relationships with local coaches, school officials, and community leaders; integrate multimedia elements into coverage; and represent the organization at events.

Requirements include a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field—or equivalent experience—along with five or more years in news and/or sports journalism, including leadership roles. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and editorial skills; possess knowledge of media law and ethical journalism; have experience with digital publishing and multimedia; and be flexible enough to work evenings and weekends and to travel locally.
