Job Summary Under the supervision of the Plumbing Shop Supervisor, the Plumber performs the duties of a journeyman‑level plumber for building maintenance, repair, and construction, and a journeyman‑level fitter for underground utilities construction and maintenance. The Plumber supports the mission of the University and the Physical Plant in operating and maintaining a safe, clean, and efficiently run campus. Appointment Information Budgeted Salary: $55.61 per hour (Step 1.0). After a 6‑month probation period, the salary increases to $61.78 per hour (Step 2.0). Benefits: Full benefits eligibility. Schedule: Full‑time, fixed. 40 hours per week, Monday‑Friday, day shift. Employee Classification: Career appointment. Job End Date: None. Work Location: UC Santa Cruz Main Campus. Job Duties Plumbing (65%) Perform duties of a journeyman‑level plumber for all campus building systems. Repair, install, adjust, maintain, and replace plumbing fixtures and related piping. Perform roddering, snaking, and high‑pressure water jet roddering of piping drain systems. Conduct soldering, welding, fusing, pipe fitting, threading, and fabrication. Adhere to current plumbing codes. Read blueprints and diagrams and follow written preventative maintenance programs. Drive a university vehicle to transport materials and tools. Maintenance (20%) Act as a journeyman‑level fitter for underground utilities construction and maintenance. Conduct maintenance, repairs, and installations on the campus water distribution system, natural gas distribution system, and sanitary sewer system. Operate jackhammers, tampers, and concrete saw cutters. Cut and thread pipes. Shovel, dig, excavate, and backfill. Safety (10%) Perform safety inspections and routine maintenance on tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles. Attend safety and training classes and perform tasks in adherence to safety protocols. Follow all product and university‑specific safety procedures when using tools and equipment. Inventory (5%) Write and maintain a weekly timesheet. Employ professional interpersonal skills in interactions with the campus community. Assist Physical Plant in maintaining an inventory of shop materials, supplies, and tools. Review project submittals relevant to plumbing and plumbing infrastructure. Required Qualifications Journey‑level plumber skills and experience. Ability to maintain, use, repair, install, and construct building plumbing systems, gas piping, sewer systems, plumbing fixtures, food service equipment, including soldering, brazing, and using pipe snakes and high‑pressure jet machines. Ability to maintain and repair natural gas, water, and sewer systems related to underground utilities. Journey‑level skills in the maintenance of equipment, tools, and machinery. Ability to read and fabricate plumbing systems from drawings and blueprints. Knowledge of CAL OSHA and state and federal plumbing codes. Written and oral communication skills sufficient for professional interactions with the campus community. Preferred Qualifications Plumbing apprenticeship through an employer with a C‑36 Plumbing Contractors License registered with the CSLB of California. Special Conditions of Employment Pass a pre‑employment criminal history background check. Pass the employment misconduct disclosure process. Possess a valid California driver’s license and participate in the DMV pull notice program. Work in variable temperature/weather, with potential exposure to odors, noise, vibrations, dust, and allergens. Use ladders safely. Conduct outdoor site visits with required personal protective equipment. Endure dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as needed. Move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs. Respond to emergencies after hours as necessary. Work overtime, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Complete required training within established time frames, including UC compliance training. Comply with the University of California vaccine policy. Report child abuse or neglect as required by the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) and sign the required statement.
