Step into a crucial role supporting the communication needs of a middle school student as a contract Sign Language Interpreter. This assignment offers the opportunity to make a real impact each day, with a consistent 7:35am start time and the chance to use your expertise to facilitate meaningful learning experiences. The student you'll be working with has some residual hearing, providing a unique and rewarding environment for you to apply and expand your skills.
Key Qualifications:
- Valid IL Professional Educator License (PEL)
- EIPA (Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment) Score of 3.4 or higher
- Proven experience as a Sign Language Interpreter, especially in educational or school settings
- Strong understanding of student-centered interpreting strategies, particularly when working with students who have residual hearing
- Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and student advocacy
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Responsibilities:
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa for a middle school student within classroom and school settings
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to facilitate the student’s access to instruction, discussions, and activities
- Support the student’s academic and social engagement through effective communication tactics
- Monitor and adapt interpreting techniques to fit the student’s individual needs and classroom dynamics
- Maintain accurate documentation as required by school policy
