Full Time Mechanic

General Summary: Inspects, tear downs, builds up, repairs and maintains diesel and gasoline automobiles, trucks and other automotive vehicles, following manuals, using hand tools and power tools. An employee of this class shall have knowledge of electrical, power transmission, brake and other automotive systems; as well as air cooled and water cooled engines. An employee of this class must be able to use diagnostic equipment and have the ability to attain ASE Certification. An employee of this class must have obtained and maintain the minimum required tools to perform the general duties.

Supervision Received: Supervision is performed under the general direction of the Director of Public Works, Public Services Coordinator and/or a Motor Pool Group Leader.

Task Statements: (The following tasks are illustrative only and do not include all of the tasks an employee may be required to perform)

• Plans work procedures using charts, technical manuals and experience.
• Raises vehicles using hydraulic jack or hoist to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of vehicle.
• Removes unit such as engine, transmission or differential using wrenches and hoists.
• Disassembles and overhauls gas or diesel engines, pumps, pump power units, generators, transmissions, clutches, power steering, hydraulics, drive shafts and rear ends using hand tools and hoist.
• Performs preventative maintenance, changes oil, checks batteries, repairs tires and tubes, and lubricates equipment and machinery.
• Repairs or replaces parts such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings using mechanics hand tools.
• Overhauls or replaces carburetors, fuel injection systems, blowers, generators, distributors, starters and pumps and other motor components as needed.
• Rewires ignitions system, lights and instrument panels.
• Aligns and adjusts brakes, repairs or replaces shock absorbers, and solder leaks in radiators.
• Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
• Repairs cooling system, diagnosing overheating problems, repairs water pump, fan, thermostat, hoses, etc.
• Repairs exhaust system - manifold, muffler, piping, etc.
• Examines protective guards, loose bolts and specified safety devices on trucks and makes adjustments, using hand tools.
• Operates equipment to test its functioning.
• Repairs mowers, saws, sweepers and other mechanical equipment
• Performs service calls for engine break down and other emergencies
• Any other tasks the Superintendents or Group Leader may assign.

1. Minimum Reasoning ability usually associated with this classification:

Ability to apply principals of rational systems (examples: bookkeeping, internal combustion engines, electric wiring systems, house building, nursing, farm management, and navigation) to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exist; to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.

2. Minimum Math ability usually associated with this classification:

Ability to compute discount, interest, profit, and loss; commission, markup, and selling price, ratio and proportion, and percentage; to calculate surfaces, volume, weights and measures.

Using Algebra: To calculate variables and formulas; monomials and polynomials; ratio and proportions variables; and square roots and radicals.

Using Geometry: To calculate plane and solid figures; circumference, area and volume; to understand kinds of angles, and properties of pairs of angles.

3. Minimum Language ability usually associated with this classification:

Read: Ability to read a variety of novels, magazines, atlases and encyclopedias; to read safety rules, instructions in the use and maintenance of shop tools and equipment, and methods and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.

Write: Ability to write reports and essays with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.

Speak: Ability to speak before audience with poise, voice control and confidence, using correct English and well-modulated voice.

5. Degree of Physical Demands (Strength) usually associated with this classification:

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.

Kneeling: Bending legs at knees to come to rest on knee or knees.

Crouching: Bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

Reaching: Extending the hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

Handling: Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand or hands.

Seeing: The ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. The important aspects of vision are:

• Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more
• Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less
• Depth Perception - three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distance and space relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
• Field of Vision - are that can be seen up and down or to right and left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
• Accommodation - adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This item is especially important when doing near point work at varying distances from eye.
• Color Vision - ability to identify and distinguish colors.

7. Environmental Conditions (Physical Surroundings) usually associated with this classification:

The Worker is Subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions.

Noise and/or Vibration: There is sufficient noise, either constant or intermittent, to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss and/or sufficient vibration (which is the production of an oscillating movement or strain on the body or its extremities from repeated motion or shock) to cause bodily harm if endured day after day.

Atmospheric Conditions: One or more of the following conditions affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, Odors, Dusts, Mists, Gases, or Poor Ventilation. These conditions are present to a degree or a length of time sufficient to cause marked discomfort or possible bodily injury to the worker.

Vehicle Emissions, Noise, Diesel Fuel and Gasoline, Parts Cleaners and Grease.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions
• Ability to legibly record and maintain records of repairs, parts, mileage, etc.

• Inventory and Maintenance Tracking Software
• Ability to tolerate exposure to dust, grease, fuel, chemicals and lubricants
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time

Required Qualifications:

• Must be at least 18 years of age with a High School Diploma or GED
• State Certified Mechanic in Michigan
• Must maintain current state appropriate certification in diesel and gasoline engine repair
• Valid State of Michigan Commercial Drivers License with the ability to obtain a Group A endorsement within 6 months from the date of hire
• Must be legally employable in the United States
• Ability to pass written examination, physical agility and skills test, physical with drug screen and fingerprint/criminal history/driving record check
