Trailer MechanicThis role focuses on inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing semi-truck tankers and trailers in a dedicated repair shop environment. You will perform mechanical, electrical, welding, and fabrication work to restore damaged trailers and tankers to safe, reliable, and compliant operating condition. The position requires hands-on troubleshooting, strong technical skills, and a commitment to quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.ResponsibilitiesInspect semi-truck tankers and trailers to identify mechanical, electrical, structural, and safety issues.Diagnose failures and determine appropriate repair methods for mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and other systems on tank trailers.Perform trailer and tanker service and repair, including suspension installation, repair, and adjustment.Repair and maintain trailer brake systems, including air brake systems, ensuring proper operation and safety compliance.Conduct electrical diagnostics and repairs on trailers, including lighting, wiring, and related components.Perform welding and fabrication repairs using GMAW (MIG) and GTAW (TIG) processes on aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and carbon materials.Repair damaged trailer structures, components, and frames through cutting, fitting, and fabrication work in a repair shop setting.Carry out pump and hydraulics repair, including troubleshooting leaks, pressure issues, and component failures.Perform some diesel engine-related work as needed, supporting repairs on trucks and associated systems.Inspect tanks and trailers to ensure they align with DOT standards, including HM183 and hazmat requirements.Use a variety of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and effectively to complete repairs.Document work performed, including parts used and repairs completed, in accordance with shop procedures.Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly store tools and equipment.Collaborate with team members, share knowledge, and assist others to complete repairs efficiently and accurately.Participate in welding skills tests and complete on-the-job certification processes as required.Follow all safety guidelines, shop rules, and regulatory requirements while performing repairs.Essential SkillsProven experience in semi-trailer and truck repair, with a focus on tankers and trailers.Hands-on trailer repair experience, including brakes, electrical systems, refrigeration units, and lighting.Ability to diagnose failures and perform repairs on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related systems on tank trailers.Experience with trailer suspension installation, maintenance, and repair.Practical knowledge and experience with air brake systems and repairs.Proficiency in welding using TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) processes, particularly on aluminum, stainless steel, and carbon steel.Ability to perform fabrication work in a repair environment, including cutting, fitting, and structural repairs on damaged trailers.Basic mechanical experience with diesel engines, with the ability to support engine-related work as needed.Capability to effectively and efficiently inspect tanks and trailers to ensure compliance with DOT standards, including HM183 and hazmat regulations.Strong knowledge of common hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment, and the ability to use them safely and correctly.Strong work ethic and reliability, with a consistent commitment to quality and safety.Team-oriented mindset, with the ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with coworkers.Desire to take pride in completed work and continuously improve technical skills.Additional Skills & QualificationsTIG aluminum, stainless, or carbon welding experience is highly valued and may be considered optional for some candidates.Experience with tank service and repair, including specialized tanker components and systems.Experience with pump repair and hydraulic system troubleshooting and maintenance.Familiarity with trailer electrical systems, including diagnostics and repair of wiring, connectors, and lighting.Ability to pass a welding skills test and willingness to obtain on-the-job welding certification.Comfort working in a repair-focused shop environment rather than a manufacturing setting.Motivation to learn new techniques, adopt best practices, and grow within a technical and mechanical career path.Why Work Here?You will join a nationwide organization with multiple locations and a strong, well-established system that supports both employees and customers. The shop is not climate-controlled, so temperatures will vary with the seasons, and you should be comfortable working in a typical industrial repair environment. The role is hands-on and tool-intensive; you will use a wide range of tools and equipment, including hammers (dead blow and ball peen), combination end wrenches from 1/4" to 1", socket sets with ratchets, screwdrivers, metric and standard Allen wrenches, multimeters, measuring tapes, torpedo levels, squares, drills (air or electric), impact guns, welding helmets (if welding is part of your duties), and a rolling tool cart or box. This basic tool list forms the foundation of what you will use daily, with additional shop tools and equipment available as needed.
