Job Title: Shipyard Laborer / Trades Helper

Job Description

This role supports shipyard and marine repair operations by performing fire watch duties, general labor, and hands-on assistance to skilled marine trades personnel aboard U.S. Navy vessels. You will help set up and clean up work areas, move materials and tools, and assist with maintenance and repair activities, including cable pulling and electrical-related tasks. The position involves regular lifting of 4050 pounds and offers significant exposure to ship repair and marine trades in a heavy industrial environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform fire watch duties during grinding, welding, and cutting of metal to support safe ship repair operations.
• Assist with setting up work areas, including staging materials, tools, and equipment for marine trades personnel.
• Clean up work areas after tasks are completed, ensuring a safe and organized workspace.
• Move and handle materials, tools, and equipment throughout the shipyard and aboard vessels, including lifting 4050 pounds regularly.
• Support skilled trades personnel with general labor tasks related to ship repair and maintenance.
• Assist with cable pulling and basic electrical-related activities under the direction of experienced professionals.
• Work aboard U.S. Navy vessels to help maintain and repair ship systems and structures.
• Adapt to varying daily assignments, including days focused primarily on fire watch, general labor, or trades assistance.
• Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment in a heavy industrial environment.
• Climb ladders and navigate confined spaces safely as part of shipboard work.
• Communicate effectively with supervisors and trades personnel to understand task requirements and priorities.
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report any issues promptly.

Essential Skills

• Proven ability to use hand tools safely and effectively.
• Proven ability to use power tools safely and effectively.
• Ability to perform heavy lifting on a regular basis, including lifting 4050 pounds.
• Willingness and physical ability to perform extensive manual labor in a heavy industrial setting.
• Ability to work safely in environments involving grinding, welding, and cutting operations.
• Comfort working at heights, climbing ladders, and accessing various areas of a ship.
• Ability to work in confined and dark spaces while using appropriate lighting such as a headlamp.
• Reliability and readiness to work extended hours, including frequent overtime.
• Commitment to following safety protocols and wearing required personal protective equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous shipyard or ship repair experience is preferred.
• Experience in marine repair, construction, or other heavy industrial labor is beneficial.
• Trades helper or in general labor roles is an advantage.
• Familiarity with ship repair environments and marine trades is a plus.
• Comfort working around electrical systems and assisting with basic electrical-related tasks under supervision.

Work Environment

This position is based in a heavy industrial shipyard environment and involves working aboard metal ships in all weather conditions. You will regularly climb ladders, work in confined and dark spaces, and may spend time in tight areas where a headlamp is required. Personal protective equipment must be worn at all times due to the presence of grinding, welding, cutting, and other industrial activities. The standard shift runs from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with the potential for 12-hour shifts and frequent overtime. The work is physically demanding, involves substantial manual labor and heavy lifting, and may not be suitable for individuals who are uncomfortable in confined spaces.

This is a Contract position based out of Portland, OR.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
