Position Overview: The psychiatrist is a type of physician able to prescribe medication in addition to counseling patients. A psychiatrist at an RCA facility has advanced training in addition and substance psychiatry. Addiction psychiatry deals with treatment methods for patients living drug and/or alcohol addiction.

Specific Responsibilities:
* Addresses the underlying issues of addiction through individual therapy, group therapy, and other approved psychiatric methods.
* Analyzes and evaluates patient data and test or examination findings to diagnose the nature and extent of mental disorder and or chemical dependency.
* Prescribes, directs, and administers psychotherapeutic treatments or medications to treat mental, emotional, behavioral disorders and/or chemical dependency including inpatient detoxification.
* Collaborates with physicians, psychologists, counselors, social workers, psychiatric nurses and/or other professionals to discuss treatment plans and progress.
* Gathers and maintains patient information and records, including social and medical history obtained from patients, relatives and other professionals.
* Counsels outpatients and other patients during office visits.
* Designs individualized care plans, using a variety of treatments.
* Examines or conducts laboratory or diagnostic tests on patients to provide information on their general physical condition and mental disorder.
* Advises and informs treatment center professionals, relatives and significant others of patients' conditions and treatment.
* Reviews and evaluates treatment procedures and outcomes of other medical professionals.
* Prepares and submits case reports and summaries to the treatment center and mental health agencies as necessary and in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

*Act as collaborating physician for site PNP staff.
* Prompt and regular attendance.
* Other duties as assigned by the Medical Director.

Education and Experience:
* M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited United States medical school.
* Successful completion of internship and residency in psychiatry specialty.
* 3-5 years' experience managing patients with substance use disorder/addiction preferred.
* Familiarity with medication assisted treatments.
* Valid and active state medical license, without any limitations on license to practice in specialty
* Eligible to participate in the CMS Medicaid/Medicare reimbursement programs.
* Valid and active DEA license with X waiver to prescribe buprenorphine.
* Knowledge of third party payer regulations, state practice guidelines and malpractice laws, HIPAA regulations, Bureau of Primary Health Care FQHC (Federally Qualified Health Care) program regulations.
* Experience or familiarity with electronic health records and patient data registry.
* Experience working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental health, criminal background, and other potential barriers to economic self-sufficiency.

Renders patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the prevention and treatment of problems related to the addiction and substance-related health conditions.
* Medical Knowledge: Understands that addiction is a chronic medical condition, and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and substance-related health conditions are as important and prevalent public health issues. Understands the established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognitive sciences and applies this knowledge to the care of patients with addiction and substance-related health conditions.
* Interpersonal and Communication Skills: Consistently uses respectful and effective communications with patients with addiction and substance-related health conditions, their families and other health care professionals, in order to optimize medical care.
* Practice Based Learning and Improvement: Stays current with evolving science and clinical practice relevant to the prevention and management of addiction and substance-related health conditions, including medical, surgical, psychiatric and obstetrical complications of substance use. He/she will be a life-long learner of patient care and will be able to appraise and assimilate new scientific evidence into the care of patients.
* Professionalism: Engages in the care of persons with addiction and substance-related health conditions in a professional, health-oriented, responsible and proactive manner, in order to reduce substance-related harm, promote health and address co-existing medical problems. Manifests a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, an adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
* Systems-Based Practice: Demonstrates an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care. Recognizes the multi-dimensional components of the systems required to reduce the incidence and impact of addiction and substance-related health conditions. Able to effectively access, navigate and engage appropriate systems (health care delivery systems, health care financing systems, public health systems, social service and child welfare systems, educational systems, criminal justice systems, legislatures and other governmental systems, and the media) to optimize care.

Work Environment: May work in a variety of environments including professional offices, clinics, hospitals, or out-patient facilities. They spend much of their time on their feet, actively working with patients.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
