JOB SUMMARY

The Crew Chief performs intermediate skilled technical work leading and participating in the work of crews involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, utility lines, drainage facilities and related appurtenances. Reporting to the Crew Supervisor, the Crew Chief works under general supervision sufficient to monitor progress and assess achievement of key performance indicators.

• Supervises and participates in the work of semiskilled and skilled workers in the installation, repair, maintenance, rehabilitation, or construction of facilities.
• Oversees, supervises, and participates in streets signs and markings, streets maintenance, utility line and drainage facility maintenance.
• Trains and inspects the work of assigned personnel; coaches or counsel's staff; assists with staff schedules and performance evaluations.
• Plans projects, work activity and equipment needs; assigns work to crew members; enforces safety regulations; maintains and monitors work schedules and time sheets; ensures the completion of assigned projects; ensures work is performed in compliance with safety regulations
• Estimates material needed for transportation, storm water or water and sewer, sign construction and street maintenance related projects.
• Maintains records of materials used for various projects, work orders with labor and equipment hours, and requisitions materials.
• Prepares and maintains records and related departmental reports.
• Performs related tasks as required.

Typical Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Thorough knowledge of repair, maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of streets, utility lines, drainage or related facilities.
• Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in such repair work.
• Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
• General knowledge of computer applications and programs.
• Ability to assign and supervise the work of others.
• Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to prepare simple reports, drawings and sketches.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

High School diploma or GED and 5-7 years' experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of streets, utilities or related facilities including some supervisory experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Demonstrated safe driving history. May be required to possess or acquire specialized certifications depending on departmental assignment including ITRE, Pesticide Applicator, Flagger, Class B Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection II certifications within one year of hire as applicable for each Division.
This position is regulated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). This position is subject to random substance abuse testing at any time for the duration of employment and while occupying a DOT regulated position.
