Position Summary

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

The Education Manager is responsible for oversight and direction of all educational programs within the Before and After Care facilities of the association. Implementation of the structure of learning within these programs includes the planning, organizing, training, and data collection for curriculum within the BASE and Kids Unlimited (KU) programs. These services contribute to a growth mindset and an increased social and emotional competence in children. The Education Manager facilitates the implementation of an education curriculum and provides educational resources for staff and parents, while ensuring compliance with performance standards and recognized best practices in the field of school age programs. The Education Manager ensures that best practices with the special needs population is compliant with state and federal guidelines and also aligns with the vision of the Y.

Knowledge and Skills

The Education Manager must have the knowledge and ability to provide direction and oversight for the education component of the school age audience with a specific focus on growth mindset and social, emotional learning. He/she will work under the direction of the BASE Child Care Director to ensure high quality programming initiatives and experiences are taking place, providing additional resources or support as needed.

The Education Manager must demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively with community agencies, local school administrators, the Licensing Coordinator and Program Managers to ensure all base sites and employees are in compliance with licensing and YMCA standards and to enhance the program.

The Education Manager must have the ability to effectively provide supervision for the Kids Unlimited and Good Vibes Programs including leadership of staff.

He/She must oversee and track the professional development for the BASE department staff as a whole in the areas of development, curriculum planning and best practices.

Essential Functions

Training

  • Collaborates with Childcare Directors to develop a program-wide training plan to prepare for staff training needs.
  • Stays abreast of applicable regulations and regularly updates training to ensure program compliance.
  • Assists teaching staff in understanding and interpreting child observation data and establishing appropriate individual child goals based on knowledge of child development.
  • Serves as a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) advisor as necessary for assessments and/or program curriculum.

Curriculum

  • Plans, develops, implements, and maintains a system for administering and monitoring the provision of high quality education services for the BASE and KU programs.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains a system of continuous monitoring and evaluation of activities and works collaboratively with other managers to ensure provision of quality assurance within the program.
  • Develops age appropriate curricula and activities that promote optimal learning and development in the areas such as STEAM, literacy, numeracy, social skills and creative thinking to prepare students for 21st century learning.
  • Provides strategies and puts into place procedures to support social/emotional development as a focus in all age groups.
  • Designs and implements educational programs that align with the needs and interests of children in local communities, as well as any relevant educational standards or guidelines.

Kids Unlimited/Special Needs Community

  • Develops, implements and actively manages Kids Unlimited Summer programs; maintains an active risk management process while working with the special needs population.
  • Assists with financial responsibilities and coordinates with the Childcare Business Office per Finance Department guidelines.
  • Oversees volunteer placement into appropriate programs for Kids Unlimited.
  • Assists with coordination of intervention from community agencies to ensure the provision of services for all children enrolled in the program.
  • Supports other staff, parents, and consultants for identification, referrals, parent permission, confidentiality of records, evaluation and individual program planning for children with special needs.
  • Ensures that services to children with disabilities are in compliance with federal regulations and laws governing disabilities efforts as defined in IDEA and ADA and assists in implementing intervention strategies within the classroom with the intent for teachers and other staff to be able to carry out strategies independently.

Administrative

  • Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
  • Works with BASE leadership to ensure that all BASE facilities and staff meet program quality standards and regulations based on YMCA requirements.
  • Implements policies and procedures to maintain a safe and secure environment for children under the leadership and direction of the Director of Childcare.
  • Conducts weekly and monthly site visits to ensure high quality educational practices and program requirements are carried out at all site, abiding by site visit goals set by BASE leadership.
  • Provides monthly ongoing site visit reports to the Director of Childcare.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the BASE program by gathering feedback from staff, parents, school administration and children, making adjustments as needed.
  • Submit verbal and written program reports based on educational objectives and goals to the Director of Childcare, as requested.
  • Assist and support the Director of Childcare with family engagement nights for the BASE community, serving as a resource for parent training.
  • Provides support to various YMCA events both on-site and in the community.
  • Assist and complete other duties as assigned.
  • Subject to BASE substitute duties as needed.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

This position must possess the educational background, technical skills and related work experience necessary to effectively perform the duties of this position:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Childhood Development, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Experience in Early Childhood Education, School Age Programming or related field.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate, empower, and support a diverse team.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge of educational best practices, curriculum development, and child development theories.
  • Familiarity with licensing requirements, safety regulations, and quality standards for school age childcare programs.
  • Ability to manage budgets, analyze data and make informed decisions to achieve program goals.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural competence in working with diverse children and families.
  • Must possess and maintain MSDE Director level certification as well as MSDE training designation, or obtain with 6 months of hire.
  • 3 years of management experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • Work is generally performed in a classroom setting or an office environment, involving face-to-face communication.
  • May occasionally need to provide gentle physical restraint to children.
  • Must be available for a variety of evening and weekend meetings as well as social and community events.
  • Some exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids as well as noises associated with children such as crying, talking and laughter.
  • Travel will be required to all site locations. Some duties may be carried out at distant locations in and out of state and in some cases where some overnight travel may be required.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
