We are seeking a motivated, customer-focused Butcher Assistant to join our team at 1818 Butcher + Market. This position plays an important role in daily market operations, combining exceptional customer service with food preparation, product presentation, and support of our butcher team.

As a Butcher Assistant, you will assist customers at the front counter, prepare house-made deli salads and ready-to-heat meals using established recipes, and help maintain well-stocked, attractive meat and deli cases. You will work alongside our butcher to ensure products are properly prepared, packaged, labeled, and displayed.

This is a hands-on position ideal for someone who enjoys working with food, takes pride in quality and presentation, and thrives in a team-oriented environment. Opportunities to learn basic meat preparation and butchering techniques may be available, but the primary focus of this role is customer service, food preparation, and daily market operations.

Customer Service & Front Counter Operations

• Greet and assist customers, providing friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive service.

• Answer questions about products, preparation methods, and cooking recommendations.

• Package, weigh, label, and price products accurately for customer purchases.

• Operate the point-of-sale system and process customer transactions.

• Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming retail environment.

Food Preparation & Market Production

• Prepare house-made deli salads, sides, cafe menu items, and other specialty items following established recipes and quality standards.

• Assist in the preparation, portioning, packaging, and labeling of ready-to-heat meals and prepared foods.

• Follow recipes consistently to maintain product quality, flavor, portion sizes, and presentation.

• Assist with daily food production based on inventory levels and customer demand.

• Ensure all prepared foods are properly stored, dated, rotated, and labeled.

Meat & Deli Case Support

• Work alongside the butcher to stock, organize, and maintain meat and deli display cases.

• Assist with packaging, labeling, and displaying fresh meat, deli products, and prepared foods.

• Monitor product freshness, quality, and presentation throughout the day.

• Rotate inventory using proper food storage and procedures.

• Assist the butcher with basic meat preparation tasks as needed and under appropriate supervision.

Cleanliness, Safety & Teamwork

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of food preparation areas, equipment, display cases, and workstations.

• Follow all food safety, sanitation, and proper food handling procedures.

• Assist with receiving deliveries, organizing inventory, and restocking supplies.

• Collaborate with team members to ensure daily production needs are met and the market operates efficiently.

• Perform additional duties as needed to support daily market operations.

• Passion for food, hospitality, and providing an excellent customer experience.

• Strong customer service and communication skills.

• Interest in food preparation, cooking, and working with fresh, high-quality ingredients.

• Ability to follow recipes, directions, and established preparation procedures accurately.

• Excellent attention to detail, organization, and cleanliness.

• Previous experience in food service, retail, deli operations, or food preparation is preferred but not required.

• Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift and carry products and supplies as required by the position.
