Surgical Technician Position Overview As a Surgical Technician at our organization, you will join a collaborative perioperative team dedicated to precision, teamwork, and patient-focused care, all aimed at achieving outstanding surgical results. In this capacity, you will fulfill the scrub role during surgical procedures, assisting with nursing care and institutional services under the guidance of a licensed professional nurse. Key Responsibilities A typical day for a Surgical Technician involves utilizing clinical expertise and technical skills to support the surgical team and enhance patient outcomes. Key responsibilities include: Clinical Expertise & Sterile Field Maintenance Maintaining Sterile Field: Apply clinical knowledge and technical skills to all surgical procedures, ensuring consistent adherence to aseptic techniques and the integrity of the sterile field. Operating Room Setup: Prepare operating rooms by organizing surgical instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies to ensure readiness for scheduled procedures. Anticipating Surgical Needs: Predict the instrumentation and equipment requirements of the surgeon during procedures, adapting quickly to changes in surgical conditions. Assisting in Surgery: Support the surgical team during both routine and complex procedures by handling instruments, supplies, and equipment with precision and care. Instrument & Equipment Management: Ensure proper handling of operating room instruments and equipment, including thorough follow-up on repairs, losses, and maintenance. Patient Safety & Regulatory Compliance Policy Compliance: Adhere consistently to hospital and regulatory policies and procedures to guarantee safe, quality patient care. Surgical Counts & Specimen Management: Ensure meticulous handling of surgical specimens and accurate counting of instruments, sponges, and needles. Safety Protocols: Promote a safe operating room environment by following established risk reduction practices, including fire prevention and safety procedures related to laser and electrosurgical equipment. Physiological Monitoring: Monitor the surgical environment to ensure that patients' physiological responses remain stable throughout the perioperative experience. Age-Specific Care: Utilize knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan to provide age-appropriate care, assessing each patient’s status and interpreting information to identify specific healthcare needs. Team Collaboration & Department Operations Collaborative Care: Work closely with surgeons, anesthesia providers, registered nurses, and other perioperative team members to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care. Room Turnover: Facilitate efficient preparation and turnover of the operating room to ensure readiness between procedures. Nursing Support: Assist with general nursing activities within the department to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of surgical patients, including problem-solving and performance improvement initiatives. Professional Communication: Engage as an active team member through effective oral communication, fostering positive interpersonal relationships and excellent guest relations. Continuous Development: Stay updated on clinical skills and surgical trends by participating in in-service programs, continuing education, staff meetings, and reviewing professional literature. Engage in departmental education, orientation, competency validation, and quality improvement efforts. Qualifications & Requirements Required Education & Credentials Program Completion: Successful completion of a nationally or regionally accredited Surgical Technology program. Certification: Certification as a Surgical Technician is mandatory. Candidates must possess and maintain a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or another recognized credentialing body. Life Support Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required. High School Diploma/GED: A High School Diploma or equivalent GED is required within one year of hire. Note on Education Condition: Candidates lacking a High School Diploma or GED equivalent will have the opportunity to enroll in a GED/HSEA program upon hire, with one year from the hire date to successfully complete the program. Competency: Successful completion of departmental orientation and competency requirements is necessary. Preferred Experience Prior experience as a surgical technician in an operating room setting is preferred.
