Bed Placement Specialist

Description To assist in facilitating timely and efficient bed assignments based on priority of patient medical needs and general patient compatibility (sex, diagnosis, age) in collaboration with the Logistics Center staff and the targeted Nursing unit. The Bed Placement Specialist maintains the electronic bed tracking board for all admissions and transfers within the hospital. Employment Details Employment Type: Part time Shift: Rotating Shift Qualifications Education: High school diploma or GED required or equivalent. College‑level coursework with emphasis in Medical Terminology, Medical Coding, Anatomy & Physiology preferred. Licensure/Certification: Not applicable. Experience: Two years of working experience with medical terminology, ICD‑9‑CM coding experience, and knowledge of anatomy and physiology. If experience not held, one or two years of education may substitute. ICD‑10‑CM coding is preferred. Registrar experience of two years: Preferred. Special skills: Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication; ability to manage multiple priorities and meet quality standards; analytical skills to prioritize requests; proficiency with office equipment and Microsoft Office; excellent customer service orientation. Duties & Responsibilities Under direction of Logistics Center leadership, facilitate the bed request process within established timeframes and communicate with Surgery, Cath Lab, and other areas to schedule appropriate patient placement. Complete pre‑admission entry into various hospital systems to ensure pre‑admit patients are entered into the electronic bed tracking board and implement the paging system as needed. Maintain an accurate bed board throughout the day, monitor for clean available beds, and appropriately update “Clean Next.” Perform daily census reconciliation between Patient Management and the bed tracking board. Notify targeted units of all transfer requests via EPIC; assist with changes when reports unacceptable within 15 minutes of notification. Perform online computer data entry (admissions, out‑patient rollovers, in‑house transfers, out‑patient type changes, reinstatement of patients, physician changes, hospital service changes). Respond to inquiries regarding patient room assignments, bed availability, and admission procedures; continuously communicate with Nurse Case Manager, Logistics Center staff, physicians, and patients/family members. Monitor the “No Booking List” with the Nurse Case Manager to identify physicians who have lost admitting privileges and inform them as necessary. Facilitate the expiration process for pathology, medical examiner’s office, family members, and funeral home representatives; receive and verify release of body forms and related documentation. Provide bed status reports to various hospital management and administration; hand off bed placement and expiration reports to incoming shift. Perform other duties as assigned.
