Data Science Intern, Core Product & Growth Insights

The Core Product Engineering team is responsible for directly shaping the user experience on our platform by building out most major surface areas on X including the Home Timeline, Search, Explore, Trends, Communities, Profiles, and more. We aim to develop high quality, full-stack products leveraging a full spectrum of engineering skills including building backend distributed services, data processing and storage, machine learning models, and experimentation. At X, our mission is to instantly connect users to the information most meaningful to them. Realizing this involves work in areas such as machine learning, applied data science, recommendation systems, information retrieval systems, natural language processing, large graph analysis, spam intervention, etc. The team’s mission is to show users the content they care about. We build relevance and machine learning models and systems to power the core of the X product. Every time users see new posts we evaluate candidates from nearly half a billion daily posts to select, organize, and deliver the best timeline. The recent products and technologies built by our team have shown consistent results in driving retention and are some of the largest contributors to engagements on the platform. What you’ll do: As a data scientist intern in the core product engineering team, you will have the unique opportunity to influence and elevate our product development process with your insights and innovations. Develop key metrics for a profound understanding of our product features, assessing their impact on platform engagement and user growth to guide product strategy. Build and maintain essential datasets, dashboards, and reporting services, serving as the south of truth for our performance indicators. Analyze data to gain insights into user behavior, thereby enhancing user experiences, uncovering growth areas, and devising new features. Design and analyze A/B tests, playing a pivotal role in data-driven decision-making for product changes. Collaborate with engineers and product managers, offering data and analytical support to enhance product development. Who you are: We are looking for talented students to join us for an internship in Summer 2024 to make X one of the best experiences out there. Skilled in applied statistics, with good understanding of software engineering development, capable of breaking down complex business challenges into quantifiable, data-driven issues. A proactive self-starter, dedicated to excellence and continual improvement in your work. An enthusiastic learner, willing to take on new challenges and comfortable working beyond your usual scope. An effective communicator, adept at explaining complex technical concepts to a varied audience. Qualifications/Requirements: Currently pursuing an undergraduate or masters degree in Mathematics, CS or Engineering-related field Able to commit to at least 12 weeks or more at SF X Office location In compliance with federal law, all offers are subject to verification of identity and eligibility to work in the US, and completion of the required employment eligibility verification form. Proficiency in data manipulation and processing with SQL and Spark, and analytical programming with Python. Familiarity with Scala (Scalding) for distributed data processing, and JavaScript for frontend dashboard development is preferred, though not mandatory.
