Software Engineer

Overview Thomson Reuters Special Services (TRSS) seeks a Software Engineer to support DoD/DoW customers. Engineers work alongside data scientists and data engineers to develop advanced ML/AI capabilities for mission‑critical products, prototyping new applications and delivering cutting‑edge solutions for high‑impact government missions. Responsibilities Lead projects and mentor less experienced developers. Collaborate with the TRSS development team to design, implement, and deliver software solutions and data science efforts. Enhance and support existing applications. Engage analytical staff to gather requirements, generate ideas, and develop documentation. Demo new software solutions as needed. Qualifications 3‑5 years of full‑stack application development experience. Experience designing, building, testing, and maintaining multi‑service backend systems and supporting frontend interfaces that deliver mission‑driven analytic or operational capabilities. Rapid prototyping: building proof‑of‑concept workflows, REST APIs, microservices, or decision‑support tools. Proficiency in Java (Spring Boot), Python, JavaScript/TypeScript (React or similar), and SQL. Experience with Docker and Git/GitHub. Ability to handle sensitive, confidential, or regulated data per applicable policies. Ability to interface directly with customers and stakeholders at all levels. Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team. Experience with modern software development practices (version control, automated testing, containerization, documentation, iterative delivery). Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. National Security Clearance. U.S. citizenship required. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting DoD, intelligence community, or other government research and development programs. Data modeling and management: relational models, migrations, data lifecycle. Container orchestration (Kubernetes) and Helm chart development. AI development tools and LLM APIs (Anthropic, OpenAI, AWS Bedrock) and experience building LLM‑based generation, retrieval‑augmented generation, or vector embedding workflows. Data engineering practices: ETL/ELT pipeline design, vector search indexing (Elasticsearch), object storage (MinIO/S3), schema migration tooling. Machine learning concepts and frameworks (embedding models, semantic similarity, nearest‑neighbor retrieval) applied in production.
