Position Summary

The Paint & Body Technician is responsible for preparing, repairing, finishing, and painting components used in commercial and architectural signage. This position requires strong attention to detail and craftsmanship to ensure all sign components meet company quality standards, customer specifications, color requirements, and architectural finish expectations.

The technician works with a variety of materials including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, acrylic, plastics, composites, and fabricated sign components. Responsibilities include surface preparation, bodywork, sanding, priming, masking, painting, color matching, clear coating, and final finishing.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare fabricated sign components for painting and finishing.
• Perform bodywork, filling, grinding, sanding, and surface correction on metal and composite components.
• Prepare surfaces through cleaning, scuffing, sanding, priming, and other required processes.
• Mix and apply automotive-grade, industrial, and architectural coatings using spray equipment and other application methods.
• Match specified colors and finishes according to customer requirements, paint specifications, samples, and approved drawings.
• Apply primers, base coats, top coats, clear coats, and specialty finishes as required.
• Perform masking and detailing to achieve clean lines, edges, patterns, and multi-color finishes.
• Identify and correct imperfections such as scratches, dents, pinholes, fisheyes, runs, orange peel, contamination, and uneven finishes.
• Operate and maintain spray guns, paint equipment, sanding equipment, compressors, and related tools.
• Maintain proper paint viscosity, mixing ratios, application techniques, and curing procedures.
• Inspect completed work for color, coverage, texture, gloss, consistency, and overall appearance.
• Protect finished components from damage during handling, assembly, packaging, and installation.
• Read and interpret shop drawings, work orders, color specifications, and production instructions.
• Coordinate with fabrication, assembly, production, and installation teams to ensure components are completed according to schedule.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe paint/body work area.
• Follow all company safety procedures and applicable requirements for handling paints, coatings, solvents, and hazardous materials.
• Properly use required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform other duties related to signage production and finishing as assigned.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience in automotive bodywork, industrial painting, sign finishing, architectural finishing, or a related field preferred.
• Experience with spray painting and professional finishing techniques.
• Ability to perform detailed sanding, filling, masking, priming, and surface preparation.
• Ability to accurately match colors and identify differences in color, gloss, and texture.
• Knowledge of paint mixing, coating systems, and application techniques.
• Ability to read work orders, drawings, measurements, and production specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality finished products.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
• Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and paint equipment.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift, move, and position sign components.
• Ability to work in a production environment while meeting quality and schedule requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with commercial or architectural signage.
• Experience painting aluminum and other non-ferrous metals.
• Experience with HVLP or similar spray systems.
• Experience with two-component/2K coatings and clear coats.
• Experience with automotive or architectural-grade finishes.
• Experience with metallic, textured, matte, satin, and high-gloss finishes.
• Experience working from architectural drawings, fabrication drawings, and finish schedules.

Success in this role is measured by the technician's ability to consistently produce  high-quality, durable, and visually accurate finishes while maintaining production schedules, minimizing rework, properly caring for equipment, and following company safety and quality standards.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
• Comfortable standing, bending, and working in various environments (indoor/outdoor)
