Paralegal - Short and Long Term Disability (Indianapolis)

Hankey Marks & Crider is looking for an entry-level Paralegal, or a Paralegal with a few years of experience, to join our growing Short & Long-Term Disability (STD/LTD) practice!

Our LTD team represents individuals seeking short- and long-term disability benefits from insurance companies. Our practice includes administrative disability claims and appeals as well as litigation in state and federal court.

Prior experience with LTD or ERISA law is not required . We will provide training in this area of practice. This is an excellent opportunity for an entry-level paralegal or someone with a few years of legal experience who wants to develop substantive paralegal and litigation skills while working closely with experienced attorneys.

Responsibilities include:

• Communicating regularly with clients regarding their claims and cases

• Coordinating with clients, medical providers, and disability insurance carriers to obtain medical records and other evidence

• Reviewing, organizing, and maintaining medical records, vocational evidence, administrative records, and case files

• Assisting attorneys with administrative disability claims and appeals

• Assisting with drafting appeal letters, demand letters, settlement documents, and client correspondence

• Tracking administrative appeal deadlines, statutes of limitation, and other critical case deadlines

• Assisting attorneys with state and federal court litigation

• Preparing initial litigation documents, including Complaints, Summonses, and Civil Cover Sheets

• Assisting with discovery, including Interrogatories, Requests for Production, and Requests for Admission

• Formatting, proofreading, and preparing briefs, motions, proposed orders, and other court filings

• Electronically filing documents in state and federal courts

• Maintaining attorney calendars and tracking court and filing deadlines

The ideal candidate:

• has excellent organizational and time management skills

• is comfortable communicating directly with clients

• can manage multiple cases, priorities, and deadlines

• has strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PDF software

• is comfortable learning new technology and case management systems

• is compassionate, dependable, and enjoys working as part of a team

Paralegal education, a college degree, or prior law firm experience is preferred. We welcome both entry-level candidates and candidates with a few years of paralegal or legal support experience. Prior experience in ERISA or disability law is not required.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is a full-time position based in our Indianapolis office, with the opportunity to work 2 days per week at home once successfully completing a probationary training period.
