Patient Access Supervisor, Emergency Department

Position Summary This position supervises personnel in the Patient Access Services department covering the Emergency Department. Responsibilities include planning work schedules, prioritizing workflow, maintaining time and attendance records, enforcing hospital and departmental policies, overseeing collection of co‑pays and co‑insurance, hiring, onboarding, and re‑education of employees. The supervisor ensures quality metrics are met, audits encounters for errors, ensures adequate staffing for each shift and coordinates coverage with other Patient Access Supervisors, and works with the Quality Assurance Analyst to complete QA audits on each team member routinely. Key Responsibilities Provides a positive, professional, and helpful impression to customers, patients, physicians, team members, and visitors. Demonstrates BMC standards by keeping surroundings clean, dressing professionally, displaying the team member badge, and presenting BMC positively. Communicates openly and honestly, follows through on assignments, and supports teamwork at all levels. Fosters a workplace that celebrates accomplishments and removes barriers to enjoyment. Supplies all aspects of Patient Access Service area—including timely, complete, and accurate registrations, pre‑certification, and insurance verification—with a daily accuracy target of 95%. Performs guest relations duties during waiting periods and coordinates workflow priorities. Conducts A.I.D.E.T. surveys for registrar performance and patient satisfaction routinely. Collects co‑pay and co‑insurance amounts at registration and at discharge for emergency collections. Maintains sufficient staffing and coverage, prepares work schedules, and coordinates coverage with other Registration Supervisors. Coaches and counsels employees to develop skills and improve performance, provides timely feedback, and administers corrective action per hospital policies. Participates in performance improvement activities, conducts time and flow studies, and works with managers and ancillary customers to improve processes and reduce costs. Orders and maintains necessary supplies; provides orientation and training for new personnel; documents new techniques and procedures. Cross‑trains staff to all registration areas and resolves system issues, coordinating updates with leadership when necessary. Completes annual employee evaluations on time and monitors or exceeds other position goals set with the manager and director. Qualifications Minimum associate degree in Business, Health Care Administration or Public Relations; bachelor’s degree preferred. Five to eight years of supervisory/leadership experience may substitute for education. Five or more years of hospital patient access experience or related experience. Sound judgment and critical thinking; strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills. Strong PC skills with Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word). Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks with strong organization and follow‑through. Excellent accuracy and attention to detail, strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Flexibility and ability to work as part of a team; composure in stressful circumstances. Compensation Range: $53,000.00 – $77,000.00. Compensation is based on education, experience, skills, certifications, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
