Title Security Officer Department Safety and Security Posting Number S01558JP Job Summary The Security Officer provides support through the Campus Communications Center and patrols the College campus on foot, bicycle, or in a security vehicle. The officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, visitors, and property. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Responsibilities Conduct daily patrols and walkthroughs of campus buildings and grounds, including locking and unlocking buildings and inspecting fire and access control alarm systems. Monitor the condition of campus buildings and take steps to prevent damage or theft, and identify and report hazards such as broken lights or unsafe conditions. Investigate incidents, crimes, and complaints involving the College or its community members, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies. Operate the Campus Security Communications Center by monitoring alarms, responding to complaints and requests, and coordinating response efforts via radio or other means. Maintain detailed and accurate records of incidents, activities, and communications. Attend 5 weeks of entry‑level training, 6‑month follow‑up, and ongoing training including de‑escalation courses. Typical Work Schedule 3rd shift; 11 pm–7 am with Wednesdays and Thursdays off. Additional hours may be required for shift coverage, weekend coverage, black‑out days, weather emergencies, and significant college events. Compensation Hourly rate: $21.00 per hour, with adjustments based on experience. Eligible for overtime, 10% shift differential, and weekend differential. 3rd Shift Differential (15%): $3.15 additional per hour. Weekend Differential: $1.00 additional per hour. Sign‑on bonus: $1,000 paid at 90 days. Benefits Health insurance plans. Retirement plan – 10.12% of annual compensation (eligible after 1 year of service). No match or vesting required. Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent required; Associate’s degree in criminal justice or related field preferred. Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain upon employment). Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the College’s Motor Vehicle Use Policy. Attendance at a Campus Security Officer Academy. Knowledge of electronic and/or manual recording systems. Ability to work three regular 120‑hour periods (18 months full‑time equivalent) as a Bowdoin College Security Officer I (1,040 hours as a Museum Security Officer may apply toward requirement). Proficiency in Patrol and Communications Center operations (minimum 96 hrs annually in each discipline). Maintain at least one area of special expertise (e.g., Field Training Officer, crime prevention, MOB, defensive tactics, drug recognition, CPR/First Aid instructor). Design, implement, and maintain a community service project of substantial value to the campus. Successfully complete Maine Campus Security Online Training Center courses. Background checks: satisfactory completion of criminal records, educational verifications, driving records (as job related), credit history (as job related). Experience Entry‑level; no prior work experience required. At least 1 year of relevant experience in safety and security field preferred.
