School Bus Driver I

Free School Bus Driver Training Program. Please note: there is no compensation provided to individuals participating in the Free School Bus Driver Training Program. Pending Board approval on June 9, 2026, a 1.25 percent increase. Free Bus Driver Training Program Details. Bus Driver Classroom Training Dates: Approximately 40 hours of classroom training. The first round of applications will be reviewed by June 18, 2026. Successful applicants will be invited to attend the Free Bus Driver Training Program that will begin with an orientation on Monday, June 22, 2026.

School Bus Driver Training Classroom Training (40-hour training)

Classroom Training will be held in the Transportation Department and is by invitation only

What you need to attend orientation: K4 printout from DMV (this document must be submitted in order to attend orientation)

Time: 9 am 1:00 pm (some classes end earlier)

Orientation: Monday, June 22, 2026

Class Begins: Tuesday, June 23, 2026

Class Ends: Tuesday, July 7, 2026

Class Final: Must be taken within 10 days after completing the class

Bus Driver Behind the Wheel Training Dates: 40 hours behind the wheel training to be assigned upon completion of the classroom training and passing the final.

Applicants who successfully complete and pass the Bus Driver Training Program and become licensed school bus drivers are eligible to apply for a permanent School Bus Driver position with the Lompoc Unified School District. Current Vacancy for Immediate Hire: We currently have approximately 7 Bus Driver I vacancies.

Application Process: Applicants who successfully meet the employment standards outlined in the Required Qualifications in the job description and the supplemental questionnaire questions in the application will be invited to participate in the Free School Bus Driver Training Program.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS FOR LICENSED SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS In order to be considered for a permanent School Bus Driver position, applicants must complete the LUSD School Bus Driver Training Program (or another program that qualifies them to be appropriately licensed) and become licensed to operate a school bus. Licensed School Bus Driver Minimum Qualifications, including Education / Experience; Licenses and other Requirements shown below:

Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and successful completion of bus driver training including valid California Class 'B' Drivers License with "P" and "S" endorsement.

• Valid California Class "B" Driver's License with "P" and "S" endorsement.
• California School Bus Driver Certificate Blood Borne Pathogens.
• Fire Extinguisher training.
• First Aid and CPR Certificates.
• Pre-employment Drug Screening.
• Pre-employment Physical Exam.
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
• TB Clearance.

Knowledge of:

• Safe and defensive driving practices.
• Proper operations of school buses.
• Applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
• Basic first aid procedures.
• Basic record-keeping techniques.
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
• Health and safety regulations.
• Oral and written communication skills.

Ability to:

• Drive a school bus safely and efficiently.
• Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance.
• Learn and apply policies and procedures related to student discipline on buses.
• Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers.

• Learn and follow designated routes.
• Learn the functionality and tolerance of the dual air braking system.
• Learn the proper use of the electronically controlled transmissions installed in the fleet.

• Meet schedules and timelines.
• Operate a two-way radio.

Application and Selection Process

All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the examination process for the position.

The examination process may include one or more of the following: written, oral, and performance examination.

Candidates must pass all parts of the examination process to be placed on the eligibility list. The final score will determine the candidate's rank on the eligibility list.

A candidate in the top three ranks (including tie scores) on the eligibility list may be considered for hire; when there are multiple vacancies in the same job classification, additional ranks will be considered.

Open and Promotional examinations are open to applicants inside and outside the Lompoc Unified School District. To qualify for the promotional examination, employees must have permanent status in the Lompoc Unified School District as a classified employee.

Promotional Only examinations are open to current Lompoc Unified School District classified employees only. For employees to qualify for the promotional examination, they must have permanent status in the District as a classified employee.

Dual Certification examinations are open to all applicants, including current Lompoc Unified School District employees and those from the general public. Dual Certification results are integrated into one eligibility list based on rank.

Eligibility lists are generally valid for up to one (1) year. Lists may be exhausted prior to the original expiration date, or they may be extended with the approval of the Personnel Commission.

EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
