Nurse Specialist (T1)

The Antepartum/Postpartum Unit at BIDMC is a comprehensive unit made up of 62 private rooms split into 3 units spread over 2 floors. The two postpartum units are 6 Stoneman + 6 Feldberg (18 and 21 beds each) and each has a level 1 newborn nursery and the antepartum unit (23 beds) is located on 5 Feldberg. The staff is one staff for all three units and anyone joining will eventually be oriented to all three practice areas. Cardiac telemetry monitoring is used when needed. In addition, the antepartum unit utilizes a centralized fetal monitoring system linked to Labor and Delivery.
A Nurse Specialist would be dedicated to data management, quality and safety of the perinatal population, and education to a nursing team. The candidate will be accountable for collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to design, implement, and measure safe, cost effective, evidenced based care strategies.

Nurse Specialists are graduate prepared nurses who have acquired the expert knowledge base, complex decision making skills, and clinical competencies for expanded practice.
The Nurse Specialist (T1) acts as a clinical leader with the primary goal of continuous improvement of patient outcomes and safe nursing practice. Clinical and professional leadership of the nurse specialist involves partnering with the Nursing Director in leading the professional practice at BIDMC, maintaining current professional knowledge/competencies and contributing to the advancement of nursing practice at the unit, system, local, and/or national level. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by an Associate Chief Nurse.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Acts as a clinical leader who supports the development and evaluation of staff utilizing the latest evidence-based practice relative to safe, innovative cost-effective, and optimal nursing care. Provides expert coaching and models clinical expertise, assisting nurses to integrate new evidence into practice.
- Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, providing individual patient consultation to integrate the holistic nursing approach into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family. Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families.
- Develops patient education for patients and populations, including care conferences, programs, or written education. Designs and evaluates innovative educational programs for patients/families, the community, and other healthcare providers.
- Leads and participates in systematic quality improvement and safety initiatives based on precise problem/etiology identification, gap analysis, and process evaluation. Creates and updates nursing policies, protocols, and procedures using evidence-based data to develop nurse-sensitive indicators in order to achieve positive outcomes.
- Collaborates with multidiscisciplinary teams to develop and implement new practice and programs.
- Collaborates with nurse specialists, unit based educators, and nursing directors on creation and implementation of orientation, clinical competencies, and other clinical educational program development. Mentors nurses in the acquisition of new skills, the effective incorporation of evidence into practice, and in career development. Plays a critical role in evaluating outcomes of training programs.
- Participates in the identification, selection, implementation and evaluation of products and equipment.
- Collaborates with nursing colleagues and other health care professionals in interpreting and using research, evaluating practice, conducting research and publishing scholarly works, representing BIDMC, locally and nationally.
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Nursing required.
- License Registered Nurse required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.
- 3-5 years related work experience required.
- Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Five years of successful work experience in nursing with two years in a specialty area.
- Current Clinical Nurse Specialist certification. Current Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) license to practice in Massachusetts.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Professional certification in specialty area.

- Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.
- Team Work: Ability to lead and direct multiple collaborative teams for large projects or groups both internal and external to the Medical Center and across functional areas. Results have significant implications for the management and operations of the organization.
- Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Physical Nature of the Job:
- Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
Pay Range:
$83,845.00 USD - $216,674.00 USD
The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
