Extensive use of complex computer software applications, databases, and computer systems. Performs intermediate-level essential functions associated with the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and remote services. Performs LIMS validations, data extracts, quality assurance on specimen acceptability, investigates specimens that do not meet established turnaround times, prepares laboratory quality assurance documentation, maintains communication with external and internal customers, collaborates with staff from other areas to resolve issues, consults with testing laboratory staff, updates website information, assists with SOPs and educational materials, may train personnel, and serves as backup to other specimen logistic staff. Advanced verbal and written communication are required. Complies with DSHS Laboratory, local, state and federal safety guidelines. Essential Job Functions EJF 1: Performs functions associated with LIMS and remote services, validates updates, performs data extracts, prepares statistical reports, monitors providers with unsatisfactory specimens, collaborates with staff to provide education, releases results, monitors pending results, investigates specimens pending in LIMS, reports inefficiencies, and coordinates follow-up. EJF 2: Provides extensive customer service and maintains communication, informs managers of logistics activities, maintains technical knowledge of specimen processing, stays updated on regulations, and uses continuous quality improvement methods. EJF 3: Initiates, coordinates, and performs independent review of specimen acceptance criteria, conducts quality assurance procedures, prepares QA documentation, contacts providers for missing information, ensures accurate patient reports, troubleshoots invalid specimens, collaborates with testing personnel, investigates turnaround time issues, prepares QA logs, maintains competency, coordinates storage and disposal of specimens, and complies with lab guidelines. EJF 4: Assists with website updates, participates in ListServ notifications, updates SOPs and educational materials, trains personnel, and serves as backup to staff. EJF 5: Serves as Safety Coordinator, enforces safety policies, participates in safety training, collaborates on compliance, conducts safety training, monitors operations to eliminate hazards, and assists in accident investigation. EJF 6: Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response or COOP activation. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Comprehensive knowledge of clinical chemistry testing procedures, quality assurance, regulatory requirements and specimen processing principles, techniques and terminology including continuous quality improvement processes. Knowledge of laboratory safety including sample-handling techniques. Ability to understand and interpret laboratory results and regulations. Ability to detect and troubleshoot problems with specimen acceptance criteria and supplies. Skill in written and oral expression, and interpersonal interactions. Skill in use of business grammar, proofreading and editing for education materials. Skill in collection and handling of protected health data and other confidential records. Skill in the use of computer, office equipment and software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, graphs, database analysis, and result reporting. Skill in the use and validation of laboratory information management systems. Ability to communicate effectively and productively both orally and in writing to internal and external customers. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required N/A Initial Screening Criteria Education Have earned a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution. Have earned an associate degree in a chemical, physical, biological science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Experience and education may be substituted as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. Experience Prefer experience in the following: Pre-analytical (e.g., phlebotomy, receiving) Clinical/Analytical Laboratory Post analytical Quality Assurance Customer Service Training Use of personal computer operations and software applications (e.g., Microsoft applications and Laboratory Information Management Systems).
