Recreation Specialist (Aquatics)

Recreation Specialist – Edison Johnson Aquatic Center We are seeking a skilled aquatics professional to join the Durham Parks and Recreation team as the Recreation Specialist for the Edison Johnson Aquatic Center. The role focuses on providing aquatics and special needs programming, managing the facility, and coaching staff to deliver safe, welcoming, and engaging experiences for Durham residents. Responsibilities Develop, schedule, and lead aquatics and special‑needs programs, including instructing participants and managing program logistics. Open and close the facility, maintain equipment and safety standards, and coordinate maintenance needs. Provide customer service, process payments, register participants, and respond to inquiries via phone, email, or in person. Prepare and maintain program records, reports, invoices, and other documentation; verify accuracy of transactions. Assist with hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising part‑time staff; coordinate training and performance evaluations. Assist in marketing and promotion of programs, monitor program expenses, and conduct community surveys as needed. Support facility management, inventory coordination, and outreach activities to internal and external groups. Qualifications Associate degree in recreation, leisure services, or related field. Minimum two years of recreation services experience in the assigned area. Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license – or ability to obtain one within 60 days. American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or equivalent). American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification (or equivalent). Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability and willingness to work the listed schedule and hours, including special‑event and seasonal operations. Licenses & Certifications (Required Within One Year of Hire) American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification. Water Exercise Instructor Certification (or equivalent). Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification (or equivalent). Additional Requirements Bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field. Experience scheduling staff for an aquatic facility or operation. Experience facilitating or coordinating training or instructional courses. Experience in mechanical pool operations (e.g., backwashing, vacuuming, priming pool pumps). Experience using recreation or office software such as Microsoft 365. Experience assisting with facility oversight, including training, scheduling, or guiding part‑time staff.
