Job Summary Responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing. Essential Functions Draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research, and explain the procedure to patients. Assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions. Dispose of contaminated sharps and other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies. Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods. Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture, such as heel or finger stick methods. Enter patient, specimen, insurance, or billing information into a computer system. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent required; no experience in lieu of a degree. Licenses and Credentials: Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver's License (State License) – HR Only preferred; MGH Security RMV Check/Registry of Motor Vehicles Driving Report – MGB Internal preferred. Experience: None required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens. Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA regulations and ability to maintain absolute discretion over highly sensitive patient information. Effective verbal communication skills; ability to convey information clearly. Proficiency in proper collection and processing methods for all specimens. Superior customer service skills, empathy, and respect for patient privacy and autonomy. Practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
