Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Endoscopy Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 9 hours Experience: Minimum three (3) years of relevant nursing experience License: Illinois state RN License in good standing Certifications: - BLS (American Heart Association) - ACLS (American Heart Association) Must-Have: - Patient assessment - Endoscopy procedures - Moderate sedation - Health history review - Patient care Description: The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame and provides care using the nursing process. The RN provides care to patients undergoing endoscopy procedures, including preparation, intra-procedure, and recovery phases for routine GI procedures such as colonoscopy and upper endoscopy. The RN delivers moderate sedation under the direction of a physician. The RN works collaboratively with unit staff to provide care to outpatient populations and delegates tasks to unlicensed personnel as appropriate. Responsibilities and duties include performing all responsibilities required by the unit as specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining accurate documentation of nursing care provided ensures that information is integrated for use by the healthcare team. An initial assessment is completed upon patient admission, and an appropriate plan of care is developed based on patient and family needs, in accordance with unit standards. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures by modifying the plan based on continuous evaluation. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others is essential, addressing issues directly and in private when necessary. Constructive feedback is offered to assist in the professional development of peers. The RN confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base and identifies their learning needs, taking initiative to find appropriate solutions. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. Responsibilities include preparing patients for procedures, completing assessments, reviewing health histories, starting IVs, and providing patient education. The RN monitors and sedates patients during their procedures. Caring for patients occurs in both phase 1 and phase 2 recovery. The RN assists during cases requiring anesthesia involvement. Overall, the role of the professional RN in Digestive Health is to define, direct, supervise, and evaluate patient care directly and through delegation, using the nursing process.
