Phlebotomist/Accession Lab

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.
• Performs screening tests and reports results.
• Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
• Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
• Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory.
• Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens.
• Makes the supervisor aware of unresolved orders.
• Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs.
• Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
• Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, and safety practices.
• Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

• Ability to communicate proficiently in English (verbal and written) in order to develop positive rapport with patients, co-workers, and other stakeholders.
• Ability to utilize telephonic interpreter/translation services to complete assigned duties if not fluent in a language the patient understands.
• Able to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, latex/non-latex gloves) as needed.
• Ability to understand medical/surgical terminology.
• Must satisfactorily complete the defined competency provided for the Phlebotomy/Accession Lab Position during a probationary period unless extension is granted by the supervisor.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certification as a Phlebotomist by an acceptable facility or training course.
• Previous experience or education in a health-related field is preferred.
• Maintenance of current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Healthcare Workers or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification for Healthcare workers preferred.

Physical Requirements:

• Continuous sitting up to 2 hours per shift.
• Continuous periods of walking and standing for 4 or more hours per shift.
• Occasional climbing stairs up to 3 times per shift.
• Remaining awake and alert while on duty for 12 or more hours per shift.
• Lifting and carrying up to 20 lbs periodically and lifting up to 50-100 lbs rarely.
• Frequently working on computers/tablets throughout the shift.
• Frequent grasping, reaching, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting.

Pay: $18.00 per hour
