Job Overview Office for People With Developmental Disabilities prioritizes the health and safety of the statewide 128,000 individuals with developmental disabilities receiving agency support. As a Direct Support Assistant, you help individuals with developmental disabilities lead richer lives. Responsibilities Provide supports and services Advocate, encourage, guide, and teach individuals expressing personal choice Ensure community integration Assist individuals with personal hygiene care, toileting, dining, dressing, meal preparation, lifts and transfers Help individuals participate in games and recreational programs Coach and encourage individuals to develop daily living skills Provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment Work with other staff to carry out and record care plans Administer medication in accordance with special instructions Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalency (GED or Direct Support Professional certificate from an accredited organization) Valid New York State driver's license, maintained throughout employment Meet physical and agility standards Salary Starting salary reflects the increased hiring salary and geographic pay differential; hiring salary includes statutory rate for CSEA Grade 9 ($42,641), increased hiring salary ($5,584), and geographic pay differential ($4,000), totalling $52,413. Within one year of permanent appointment, employees will have their permanent non‑competitive employment status converted to permanent competitive status. Local Bidding Agreements will be honored for CSEA positions. Preference will be given to OPWDD employees impacted by closures; indicate this on your resume. All OPWDD employees must maintain eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid programs. Employees on long‑term leave can bid on positions but must report to work within fourteen (14) days and perform essential functions. Eligible state employees may receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. If you are a New York State employee serving in a permanent competitive qualifying title and eligible for a transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law, you may be appointed to this title as a permanent competitive employee.
