Transportation Specialist
Churchill County is hiring for a new full-time Transportation Specialist. This position typically works Monday through Friday and plays a vital role in supporting senior citizens in our community. The Transportation Specialist delivers nutritious meals to homebound seniors through the Meals on Wheels program and provides safe, reliable transportation to medical and other essential appointments. In addition, this role is responsible for completing routine bus inspections and assisting seniors and individuals with disabilities in accessing vital services throughout the community and surrounding areas through our CART program.
Individuals in this role must be skilled at interacting with senior citizens, observing and monitoring their well-being, and reporting any concerns to supervisory staff at the William N. Pennington Life Center.

As a full-time, regular position, the person hired would be enrolled in the Nevada PERS retirement system. In addition to the salary paid, the county contributes an additional 36.75% into PERS on the employee's behalf (value of $6.48/hour or approximately $13,400 annually). In addition, the employee will not contribute to Social Security, resulting in an additional 6% in take-home pay (an equivalent of $1.06/hour or $2,200 annually). The county also pays 100% for employee-only health insurance premiums (equivalent to $6.49/hour or $13,500 annually). An employee in this position will also receive full accruals of vacation leave (8 hours per month) and sick leave (10 hours per month), in addition to 8 hours for pay for 11 paid holidays.

Essential Functions
- Demonstrates regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Inspects vehicle to ensure that it is in a clean and in operable condition; completes inspection paperwork/checklist; reports the need for service or repair; ensures that vehicles are scheduled for routine maintenance as required.
- Assists with packing and transporting meals to isolated or homebound senior citizens and residents with disabilities.
- Drives vehicle to and from various locations, following a pre-established schedule or on an on-call basis; adjusts schedules as required.
- Maintains driver log; if required, lists client name, address, and other information for each trip.
- Transports meals and beverages to the homebound, assuring that the meal is safely delivered; assists with packing of meals; reports unusual circumstances (such as no one home, no response at the door, etc.) to Senior Center Manager.
- Ensures temperatures of meals are compliant with regulations and procedures.
- Communicates any client welfare concerns to Senior Center Manager.
- Washes and cleans the interior of the vehicle; fuels the vehicle.
- Participates in in-service training to update skills and learn techniques for dealing with various clients.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the division's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Education and Experience: High School diploma/GED; AND one (1) year of customer service experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of: laws, rules and regulations for operating a motor vehicle in the state of Nevada.
- Food safety and handling principles, practices and equipment related to the work.
- County geography.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including records management.
- Communicating effectively in oral and written forms.
- Techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
- Skill in: working without close supervision in standard work situations.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
- Understanding and following oral and written directions.
- Driving a vehicle skillfully and safely.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
- Dealing effectively with disabled individuals and others needing special assistance.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or division goals, objectives and activities.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
- Nevada Driver's License.
- First Aid, CPR and elder abuse training/certification within three (3) months of date of employment.
